Man accused again of dumping oil on highway :skull:

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - Maryland State police have charged a man with dumping a hazardous material on a highway in Rockville.

Thirty-four-year-old Jonathan Crane of Rockville has also been charged with first-degree assault and reckless endangerment. He was arrested on Friday.

Troopers say they found Crane walking on a ramp from northbound Interstate 270 to Montrose Road. Officials say Crane was carrying a container with chain oil. Troopers also found another container with chain oil farther down the ramp.

Authorities say Crane was arrested on October by Montgomery County police in a similar incident on the same ramp that resulted in several motor vehicle collisions.

I was high sided on an exit from a freeway from oil. Luckily I was at a stop light and when the light turned green I left slowly and halfway through the turn the rear end went away, thought I was going to low side then WHAM! It bit in the dry pavement and over I went, broke my arm and minor scrapes and bruises. When the cops/medics arrived (some lady called them when she saw me go down, she told me she thought I broke my neck the way my head was slammed into the ground, I do recall the pressure was rather great, thanks Shoei!) we went out into the street where I lost it and sho nuf, there was a large trail of erl. No clue how it got there, but bummer for me. Oh that little stunt totaled my 1987 GSXR1100, mostly plastic damage.

I drove on that very ramp today, 270 on to Montrose Road. The sad part is had he driven about another 5 miles he could have disposed of the oil (at no cost) in the county run landfill which specifically has containers just for used oil. :angry2:

A good sentence would be road duty for 1000 hours walking along picking up trash.

It doesn't sound like he wanted to "dispose" of the oil. He was setting a trap for motorists.

I hope he gets real jail time, not community service. Those charges should be felonies.

:dribble: Some guys are just jerks. He should be put somewhere he won't be able to harm others. I doubt that community service would be useful for such a lowlife. The only real justice would be if a car slid into him while he was messing up the road.

On another note....

When you drive by your local QUICK Lube, keep a VERY close eye on the adjacent pavement. Yes, I rode in front of an oil change shop and a knucklehead tech didin't put the drain plug back in a car. It is VERY hard to stay upright on copious amounts of brand new oil. It wasn't hard to trace the trail back to the service bay, either. :blink:

As far as the arrested dipshit goes, I say find a deserted strip of pavement, oil it, and drag that ******* around by his scrotum. :angry2:

Doesn't surprise me. Some ******** up here a few years ago was charged with spiking road in directly in front of his house "To make people slow down".

Its easy to slow down when your run over a 100 12" railways spike that have been hammered into the ground 7"

I missed this post yesterday, but remembered it when reading the paper this morning. The guy was doing it to intentionally cause accidents and HOLY ***** I use that ramp on occasion!!! Seems he thought he was getting back at the cops for his half-dozen tickets. Homicidal jackasss couldn't recognize that his own attitude was the problem!

Throw his nekid pasty butt into some nasty jail and give the guards some ear plugs.

Paint, Oil Linked To Rockville Crashes

Be careful driving toward the Maryland State Police barracks in Rockville. If the radar gun doesn't get you, the oil slick might.

State police said yesterday that a Rockville man's apparent vendetta against law enforcement might have caused several accidents in Montgomery County, including two involving police cruisers. An officer spotted the man Friday -- for the second time -- dumping oil on a hairpin highway exit ramp off Interstate 270, less than a mile from the barracks, police said.

In recent months, accidents have followed sudden appearances of oil and paint on the loop-shaped offramp from northbound I-270 toward westbound Montrose Road, police said. The ramp leads to the state police barracks, a county police station and the county's jail.

State police said they suspect that behind it all was Jonathan Crane, 34, a Rockville information technology consultant and former mechanic who found himself on the receiving end of a series of traffic tickets and a drunken driving charge last year.

"This, well, it's strange," said Lt. Clifford Hughes, commander of the Rockville state police barracks. "He's way above retaliation."

In October, after Crane had been ticketed six times in the preceding six months, he was charged with spreading oil on the ramp -- the exact spot where he received a $130 ticket in August for failing to control his speed.

At about 12:40 a.m. Friday, he was walking along the ramp with a container of chain oil when a Montgomery County officer drove by.

According to state police, the officer found a second container of chain oil farther down the ramp. Officers found Crane's 1989 Mercedes parked in the bushes. On the bumper, they said, was a splash of green paint that resembled a concrete sealer recently found on the ramp.

Yesterday, he remained in the county jail awaiting a bond hearing tomorrow.

Crane's attorney, David Grover, declined to comment on the latest round of charges, saying he had not spoken with his client. Grover described Crane as a "very intelligent person." Of the repeat charge of dumping oil on a highway, Grover said, "it's different."

Crane, who owns a $400,000 condominium in the 600 block of Ivy League Lane, accepted a deal last month to settle charges stemming from the Oct. 1 incident. He pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and was placed on probation for two years. Prosecutors dropped charges of dumping a hazardous material that could endanger others and maliciously destroying property.

According to state police, the dumping contributed to several accidents, one of which involved a Montgomery police cruiser.

More than a month after that crash, a state police cruiser crashed in the same spot, and investigators found an oily substance on the road, Hughes said. After that incident, state police sent a memo to all law enforcement agencies in the area warning them that oil had been appearing on the ramp, he said.

Crane's October arrest on the ramp came less than a month after he was charged with driving while impaired and driving under the influence after a single-vehicle accident early Sept. 6. He was acquitted at trial.

Crane was fined $100 in April for having an expired registration; $90 in May for failing to obey a traffic control device; and $130 on Aug. 29 for failing to control vehicle speed to avoid a collision on the westbound Montrose exit ramp.

"Obviously, he likes that ramp," Hughes said.

I rarely ever get up on a stump to preach but............ :angry2:

In our parts, it seems every stoplight (especially the left turn lane) is a depository for leaking oil and other vehicle fluids. Left turn lanes on main arterials are especially nasty as well as those used by heavy trucks.

The sand and gravel is out to get us in the winter, and the other stuff is waiting for us in the summer.
