Well, I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet, but...

Coming on the heels of his win at this years Utah 1088, Matt pulled off another great ride and came away with a first place finish at the first The Good, Bad and the Ugly (GBU) Rally. Covering a distance of approximately 1917 miles in just under 32 hours, he was able to bag an astonishing 19,000+ points. A view of his route can be viewed at his website, here.

While bonus locations were spread across the state of Montana, higher points could be obtained by riding "routes", which included three bonus point locations (a start/end point, along with a middle point). The three points of a route did not net the rider any points until all three points were documented correctly. Routes included such roads as the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park, or Lolo Pass. Also, to make the rally more friendly for newbies to the rally riding scene, pre-arranged Saddlesore guides (labeled as being Good, Bad, or just plain Ugly) were loops of bonus locations that would allow the rider to document a ride of 1000+ miles in less than 24 hours. Using the Saddlesore guides, a new rider could then add additional bonus points or routes as they saw fit. If my memory serves me correctly, Matt snagged a total of 8 routes during the rally.

Finishing first in the "New to Sport" category, created for those new to rallying, was Mike (who assisted Wendy C. with her 5th place finish in the Unlimited category ;) ) and Puppychow, who rode to a third (maybe second?) place finish! Great riding by all those involved. :yahoo:

Thanks for posting. Sounds like some great riding routes.

Congrats Iggy it looks to be a new streak has begun. Congrats to all who rode.

There was a certain Florida rider with a 09 FJR, any word on him?

Hope this becomes a lock for an yearly rally. What a beautiful area!

Iggy....My hero!!!! Congratulations on another excellent finish.

You are definately on a roll this year my friend. I am guessing that it has something to do with the water in Pasco, WA. The same water that Peter Behm drank in large quanitities at your place prior to the IBR start.

I smell a business opportunity... Pick up a few thousand recycled plastic water bottles, rinse, and then fill with water from your own taps..... Call it "Matts Winning LD Energy Drink".

Awesome ride!

Congrats Iggy

There was bad news with the good too as we lost iconic IBR vet **** Fish to some odd happenstance on Going to the Sun (early in the rally, so it wasn't fatigue). It's still being investigated so details are slim.

That we did. A very sad day for the LD community. I arrived at the start of the road about an hour or so after the accident, but ended up bailing on that bonus due to the over-abundance of deer (I didn't have great luck with deer during the rally) I had spotted on the way in, and a tourist family hogging the bonus location sign. Didn't have a clue what happened until after the rally.

The night before the rally began, during the riders meeting, we were re-informed that we would not be able to use a nearby private road. The rally organizers had asked permission for use of the road, but it had been denied by the owners. The exchange of questions and answers that followed between **** and Bob Torter was priceless. I didn't get a chance to speak to him much before the rally, but he came across as a great, genuine guy.

Or maybe it's not the water, but a Gen 1 FJR that's the key to a victories recently. I was tickled that I was able to ride hard, get a little luck, and edge out Jeff Earls for the win. That's been a dream for some years now..

Losing Fish sucks.....I loved that crusty guy and his loud-piped Buell.

And Montana is an incredible state to go ride. Lot's of nook, crannies, great views, and very few cops..that' only seem to care if you're being stupid about speeding.

I'll post up a route when I wake up....it's taking me 2 days to recover from this one. ;)

I do have to say that when I was headed down to Yellowstone right after the start, I felt great relief when I saw that blue and yellow beast coming up from behind to pass me. If I was heading the same way as him, I knew I was on the right track. I was a tad bit concerned when all of the other bikes infront and behind me at the beginning turned northward, and only me and the other Matt (a local riding a 250cc DS bike for the rally) took off south.

Ditto. Earls was behind me and took a left....and if he goes the other direction as you....it's disconcerting. However, I think the southern Idaho stuff was a good choice. Some didn't realize how fast of roads are down there. ;)

I didn't see the DF thread already started elsewhere. Might I suggest we take the sad news and keep it there while keeping this thread for congratulating Iggy on the good news?
