Hello,

I'm new to the forum, and am interested in buying a second bike for my commute to work. I get up at 4:30AM and usually leave the house at 5AM, so coffee is almost a safety issue to me, as well as one of my most favorite vices. (I roast and hand grind my own coffee.)

So, to all you commuters out there: How do you drink coffee on a motorcycle safely while keeping it hot?

Is there a good motorcycle usable thermos with a long drinking tube on the market? Are there any electrical warmer attachments? What do you use?

I know the obvious answer is to drink the coffee before you get on the bike, but I have a 45 minute commute to work, which is mostly on the interstate and am in a habit on drinking it on the way to work. Please give me advice from the great storehouse of knowledge of this forum.

Thanks for you help!

Dave,

What I do is drink a big cup of coffee before I go. Yes you will have to get up a bit earliier but this way you're awake and ready to ride.

BTW welcome to the forum!!

It would be fun to roast and grind coffee, but I don't need another hobby, so I'm not even going to ask about what's involved. I make a quad espresso and drink it with my breakfast. That's usually my caffeine for the day.

I don't think there is a safe way to drink coffee on a motorcycle, but I think I've seen cupholders on Gold Wings, so someone else probably thinks differently.

I guess if I wanted to drink coffee while riding, I'd probably want to be on an AE so that I had a free hand.... or maybe an insulated "beer helmet" with the straw to your mouth.

I dunno. Oh yeah... Welcome to the forum!

Some of the guys use a cooler attached to a camelback hose system. I believe this would keep your coffee hot enough for a commute. As far as keeping it warm with a heater, not sure about that one.

On the Wing I used the Big Boy drink holder. Many thousands of miles with one (and yes, it is safe). https://www.touringspecialties.com/bigboy.html

However, the FJR is not set up to support that type of lump on the handle bars. Better to keep the thermos stuff for before/after riding. While on the bike, a drink system can be used, but it's best to keep the load off the controls. This has worked for me:

I may be the world's biggest coffee addict, but I also have a cup before I leave and then start again once I get there. Then again, I have a pretty cool commute on mostly twisties and there's not really much chance to drink coffee.

If you do a search for "motorcycle cup holder" though, you'll find a lot of products like this thing. I talked to a Wing rider at the Cape Fear rally who used this one and liked it a lot.

You'll have to get a bit creative to mount it since you can't just bolt it to our odd shaped bars. For hot weather hydration, I rigged a standard bicycle water bottle cage to a RAM ball and I attach it the RAM ball I have in the left unused mirror mount hole. Something similar would work for a cup holder.

Of course, you'll need a flip front helmet.

That's easy...have a mug before you leave the house, and get yourself a stainless steel thermos full of that home brew, for when you get to work. This works great for me :good: :hyper:

Thermal mug sitting in an unzipped tank bag. You have to have a flip=face helmet of course.

Before I joined a 12 step program

I kept a 12 v grinder in my tank bag

a 1/3 cup of Sumatra beens wrapped in foil on a header pipie

a 1.5 cup of water in a steal cup with lid on another header pipe

a french press in my tank bag

after the second crash I joined MRCA (Motorcycle Riders Coffee Annonymous )

have had a couple of slips since then but have been lucky enough to be clean while riding for 9 years now - one day at a time

Off to the coffee house

Ta Ta for now

I once attached a RAM-mount cupholder to the tripletree riser ball but not having a modular/flip helmet the application limited its use. I only use it now when riding with 'Wings so that I'll feel accepted - not. :)

There have been times, though, when I've stopped on the side of a desolate Texas highway to rehydrate and would've liked a good place to set a bottle of water down.

Pop one of these babies in your mouth just prior to rolling down your driveway.

150mg caffinie per hit.... within 3-4 miles, you'll be wired in the open position. :yahoo:

Dave,

First of all Thanks for Your Service!

Believe it or not, I am using a Elastic Velcor band that holds a 20 oz coffee cup that sits on the handle bar riser between the tank /w a cap and insert a Long Flexible straw that I can reach while I am riding.

It works very well.

I don't drink coffee while en route. I have a cup before I leave, then haul my full commuter mug inside an empty Skyway hydration kit thermos. It's still plenty hot when I arrive, and I don't have to drink the nasty firehouse coffee until my second day of the shift.

Dave-

Out of total respect for you and your service to our country, I'm not going to pummel you with sarcasm. I'll simply ask that you seek a safer alternative to your caffeine addiction than drinking coffee while you ride

Personally, I prescribe to the method that many have suggested, have a cup BEFORE you ride, however, I'm diggin' Warchild's suggestion.

Now, get your *** back home and ride.....that's an order!

So if you're off to the coffe house, how's that gonna affect your 9 years of clean time?

As they say, "If you don't want a haircut, don't hang out in the barber shop."

Me personally, I'm in full blown coffee addiction. My pump type Espresso machine gets regular exercise at home. And at work, we buy Sumatra beans and grind a fresh batch for each new pot. I get to work late compared to my co-workers (they arrive at 0500 and me at 0530) so a fresh pot is always waiting for me to thaw out with after my cold and rainy commute in on the FJR. I can stop drinking for the 40 minute commute, so I must not be an addict!
