I have a coupe options. First is a used 06 with 11k miles, and extended windscreen and a Russel day long seat. They are asking $7700 for that. IIRC, this is first gen?

Next is an 08 that hasn't been sold from the dealer, so its new from the showroom floor, but I am hoping to get a fairly serious discount on it. I am thinking if i can get it down around 10K, it might be the one. The only problem is its black, and everyone has black motorcycles. I don't like being like everyone else. :blink:

No, the '06 was the first year of the newer (second) generation. So these are essentially the same bikes. It sounds to me like both bikes are a little bit high in price for this time of year. But you did say these are asking prices. I would bet that there is more room for negotiation on the used bike price as they probably paid (or gave trade value of) less that wholesale on it. (Trade in value on the '06 is only ~ $5500)

I guess you need to answer if it is worth the > $2k to you for the new one. The '08 is still going to have a one year factory warranty, and be eligible for a 4 year YES warranty extension, which you can get for ~$400. There were a few very small changes over the two model years.

The color of a bike is of no importance to me personally, unless it is one of those ghey teal green colors that BMW used to use. :eek:

I came from an 06, crashed out at 72,000 mile, never had a bad day on that bike (well One).

Went new 08, only difference is a linear throttle pulley, and the one year + the 4 year YES warranty.

Since I tend to keep things having the warranties was worth the price differentness to me.

 
So and 06 and on a G2 and clutch slave cylinder. Don't forget he will need to powder coat the wheels to make them black and be cool. Silver wheels suck.

didn't the '08 also get the 1st gen (easier to pull) clutch slave? Or was that later on?
Wasn't until the 09 model that they 'upgraded' back to the Gen I clutch slave cylinder.
Is it a bolt in replacement to change back to the old style slave cylinder? Or do you just have to avoid gradual uphill slopes in traffic like around Harrison AR? (that place is evil for motorcycles. :dribble: )

Yeah, bolt in. But I'd advise staying the hell away from AR just to be safe. ;)

Truth be told though, I love that place on the XS. Its like the guys that made the roads there were race track designers on their days off. Heaven on two wheels. Highway 123 and the Pig Trail are something that God himself would ride. When I get an FJR, I will be heading to Eureka Springs with my buds to conquer more roads, and explore more. If any of you wants to and can drink like a fish during the BS sessions at the motel room, I am sure you could get an invite. :yahoo:

There are a couple videos of my last outing on youtube under user 81XS11. The guy filming was on a Connie, and I am the one with the white helmet. Have a look if you like. The fisheye makes things look much slower than it really was. Most of the time we were hitting 80-100 in the straights. The connie was hitting warp 9 or something like that... :dribble:

Make sure the '08 is a new bike if you lean that way. If it's one they picked up at auction, it won't be warranted.

Of course, they're supposed to tell you that, since it's effectively used if it's one of those. . . .

I bought my 07 for $6999. Had a few scratches but rides well and mechanic gave me the Ok to buy it. You should negotiate a good price. See if you can ride both and find out which one you like better. Color can be changed for a small price. Good time to buy. Good Luck

 
All else aside, I'd go with the much prettier blue. But the if the YES warranty is available on the 08, I'd lean that way. If you do get the newer, you can get the YES from D&H cycle for around $300 for four years. Sweet deal.
