Many of us have CalSci windscreens on our Feejers. I had an opportunity to interview Mark Lawrence, the genius behind the screen. He's hilarious. He's also put more than 500,000 miles underneath motorcycle tires and has opinions to spare. Here's a couple of snips . . .

Tell me about your first bike . . .

I got a paper route when I was 12. I saved my money for a year. About two weeks before my thirteenth birthday, I gave my mom $100 (an enormous sum for a 12 y/o to have in ‘69) and said, “I’m having that mini-bike at the Yamaha shop for my birthday, or I’m burning the house down. But whatever you decide is ok with me, Mom.”

At this point, the stories diverge. My mother claims “I always said if he could work that hard and save money like that, he could have whatever he wanted.” My story is that for the next two weeks there was stony silence at dinner every night, then my parents would go upstairs to their room and have a big fight. You’ll have to decide on your own which story to believe.

What attracted you to motorcycling?

I dunno. Too long ago. Sailing was too slow. Computers didn’t exist. Girls had cooties. (actually, now they have divorce lawyers, which is far worse. . .)

The rest of the interview can be found at midliferider. It's a fun read.

I'm curious...
Did you ask him his thoughts on AGATT?

*snerk*

<Ducks and runs for cover>

Wild, huh?
Wild??? I work 2 blocks from his shop and he has passed me riding his Honda ST...

...wearing a tank top...

...and shorts...

...with sandals...

...and a full-face helmet.

But he is a funny guy and knowledgeable without being pretencious.

LOL
My first ride with mark was before there were FJR's ...a group of us met in Auburn for some hair-on-fire-paced mountain riding. Mark came up to my relatively new v-strom and started going over my farkles, asking this, telling that, measuring that. (in early 2003 the strom was a new and quirky beast that none of us had figured out, but all wanted too.). I had come over the sierras and seeing mark in baggy levis -(a good few inches shorter than his short legs), and flip-flop sandals was quite the site. Everyone else was geared up like a safety nazi convention. We tore off and had a great day of extremely spirited riding. Mark, a very "interesting" style of riding. I remember the day well because of my first impression with mark ...and because this group of skilled riders got totally schooled by a tall redhead girl from Oklahoma who worked us all handily with the best riding form and road-mechanics that I've seen to this day.

Since then I run into Mark on occassion ....but it was that first impression that will always be the memory. I can't tell you how many motorcycle forums you'll see his famous jabber on oil. I'm not qualified to know if his talk is fact or fiction, but certainly enough folks have bought into what he says that it is one of the most commonly referenced articles around.

I can't read one of his articles or see a farkle of Mark's without thinking of that squirely fellow riding like hell in the high-water jeans, no socks and sandals -through the snowy sierra backroads. LOL LOL ....funny
