The iPad 2 is (has been) on the market. Its expected the iPad3 will be here before summer. But as a few above stated, I'd go with a good powerful laptop.

Your decision to go laptop is a smart one.

My wife brought home a brand new iPad2 about 3 months ago. She scarcely uses it so I commandeered it and have been using it as my internet surf tool. All I can say about it after 2.5 months of daily use is what a piece of ****. And to think it cost what it does baffles me, not to mention how the minions flocked to the stores to snag one when they came out. I was having to utilize my desktop for so many things that the iPad could not do on the net that I have just plain given up on the iPad. Apple's proprietary software requirement is total BS. No Flash, for example, not to mention the way one is forced to navigates and utilize features online. The WiFi completely sucks. I have a great broadband network here at home and the iPad is so weak, it won't grab a signal in my garage. If not for it's size, my Android phone makes the iPad 2 seem like an obsolete toy. I swear to God, if it didn't belong to the school she teaches at, I'd throw this POS in the street and run it over. Bottom line, it's a giant smartphone that isn't very smart.

Amazing...That's pretty much how I feel about just about everything Apple puts out. I'll never understand how so many people can be so stupid and pay what they pay for that crap...Oh well.

BTW...My wife is jonesing for an iPad. She's a therapist and apparently they have some cool apps for stuff she would like to do. That's a lot of money for a one task tool.

This thread actually took a page and a half before the Apple haters came out. Good job in your restraint!

I can't say I'm an Apple product hater but there seems to be so much you have to do in order to make it compatible with other more widely used programs, etc. so when I decided to buy a tablet I went with the Asus Transformer Prime. It does most everything the Ipad can do for about $150 less. Plus it has an HDMI port on it and a Micro SD slot. I can also purchase the keyboard/docking station for the $150 I saved by not buying the Ipad. Then I can either use it as a tablet or a laptop.

Keep in mind that if you're still considering an iPad that the iPad 3 is expected this year. Double the screen resolution ("retina" display of the iPhone 4 scaled up). Don't buy a 2 and see it drop in value overnight.
