Is is bad to go 0-60 in first gear?

What kind of silly question is this?

Is there supposed to be a follow-up punchline or something?

60 to 0 can happen really quick when that "white mini-van of death" pulls out in front of you. Of course, you will have a short flight before you stop for your "controlled" landing.

Is this a trick question? Honestly, I have not checked to see how fast it goes before hitting red-line. But I have wound it out in all the gears - serveral times.

I had an interesting experience on the way to work yesterday. I was several car lengths behind a truck getting ready to go through a green light at about 40mph. The light turned yellow, and the truck got on the gas to make the light, so I decided I had enough time to make it as well (I know, I should have stopped, but sometimes I push yellow lights a bit, bad habit). Anyway, I am on the gas accelerating pretty good and closing the gap between me and the truck, when at the very last minute, he changes his mind and SLAMS on the brakes to stop for the still yellow light. So now I have to go from heavy on the gas to HARD on the brakes with very little room to stop, and now my speed is almost 50.

Thank God for the brakes on this bike. I wouldn't have been able to stop in time if I had been on the Wing. ABS engaged on both wheels and I just about stood the FJR on it's nose. Somehow I managed to get it hauled down and stopped a few feet short of the truck. It definetly was an eye opening experience.

Granted, I know I put myself in that position by attempting to sqeeze in on the yellow light. It is one thing to have to stop quickly, but it is quite another to have to go from hard accelleration to hard braking in an instant, and the added velocity only increases your stopping distance.

Food for thought....

I also had an interesting experience, although on the way home from work yesterday. Following my normal path home, I turn left onto a small residential street (2 lanes both ways) and was in the far right lane. I was probably doing 30 MPH by the time I see a pickup truck pulling a long flatbed trailer (lawn service setup) pull out into the road going the same way as me... He of course pulls out wide and starts driving in the inside lane... which is fine by me, although he takes forever to do it, and I'm not quite sure which lane he's actually going to stay in. As a result, I'm almost on his tail by the time he finally gets the end of the trailer in the road.

Since he's going a lot slower than me, I begin to pass him on the right, when he starts coming back to the right... into my lane... I can either slow down (a lot) and let him merge, or speed up and get in front. Luckily, I'm on the FJR, and as that gap is narrowing, I get on the gas... and the horn, and am in front of him before he could drive me into the sidewalk.

Gave him one of these :****: for good measure as I went by.

And that's why I bought one with ABS. I tend to push things a bit too.
July 1, 2003 I rear-ended a Jeep Cherokee that I thought I was following far enough back. The Cherokee did a panic stop w/ABS and the Camry I was in didn't have it. There was no where to go but into oncoming traffic (not a good option). I got on the binders just short of lockup but it wouldn't stop in time. I just went right under the rear bumper about 10 inches and crinkled the hood. The airbag didn't deploy, but the airhag driving the Jeep claimed injuries (NFW) which was probably worth 5 grand or some crap like that (never asked my ins. co.). Anyway, those points drop off next week and I'm clean again!

Semi-related rant: I can't believe car companies still get away with providing safety equipment as optional. And I saw my first side curtain deployment Sunday.

Back to topic: I don't recommend hard twists of the right grip in first gear while two-up. Take my word for it.

Is it bad to go 102 mph on the quarter mile with an FJR?

don't know...maywannadoit... :glare:

The main reason why I choose to ride mellow enough to avoid similar circumstances is not my concern about being able to stop the bike quickly enough but almost the opposite...these modern bikes can stop so fast that I always fear being rear ended after stopping the bike on a dime. These FJR's are so hot, we often get cars behind us in traffic trying to keep up just to get a good look which is flattering until we have to do the 60-0 move.

I would say yes. That would mean your doing about a 13.5 second quarter mile.

Better check an see if one of your plug wires fell off. :dribble:

Only ifin ya donts shifts to 2nd!

Taking a gear to redline on a FJR? Who the hell would do such a dastardly deed? :p
