Is oil build up at final drive/motor normal?

My '08 at 10k looks the same. If that's as bad as it gets, I'm not worried.

However, I did purchase YES from D&H Cycle just in case I need it.

Ive noticed from day one that some of these seals just weep or mist ever so slightly. Never gotten worse in 48,000 miles, but it is different from my XX Blackbird which had absolutely perfect, clean seals. Of course, it also had a chain so the whole tail end was always a mess. Just ride it. If it bothers ya, clean it once in awhile. Being too anal takes fun out of the riding.

Just did 900 miles this past weekend and noticed some oil building up right behind my shifter where the final drive meets the motor.
Is this part of a new bike breaking in or do I have a problem?

Thanks in advance

If you look at the top bolt, and work your way a little back it looks to me as if you may have cracking in the aluminum there, or am I just seeing things with this picture?

If for instance that bolt was overtightend it cracked the outer housing, its possible that it is not as tight as it should be, causing the gasket to weep.

If I am just seeing things here, and in fact all those bolts are tight, it could just be a little weeping going on, and may just go away. I would keep my eye on it.

Hard to tell just by the picture though.

Those are just marks in the casting, not cracks. Mine is the same, I thought it was cracks at first but it is not.

That is not much at all.... we just did 3000K miles last week to / at / from, EOM and I have oil coming out of every where... the worst spot for my 08' is out of the shift shaft area... you can see where the oil is being blown across the aluminum from the highway wind..... For me its probably because I run Mobil 1 and it seeps out like this in everything I use it in... Happens to me with Amsoil too..... I'm sure its fine but i'm going to keep an eye on it... I will take some pictures and post it....

This type of think happens to all my bikes probably because I use synthetic in all of them...

when i pulled my back tire off to answer the question from Canadian FJR i also took off the peg and side cover and all to plastic around the u joint. Yamaha has apparently addressed the lack of lube problems because there was about a half oz. of grease flung all around that area. after the EOM weekend and the 1700 miles i accumulated on it my bike looked exactly like the pictures. that was the only cause i could find.

Amazing what some people will attribute to oil, etc. 50k on Frank, he's bone dry everywhere he's supposed to be, oiled with both Mobil 1 or Rotella where he's supposed to be. Leaking fluids is NOT a normal situation, the area around the shaft output should be dry, around shift shaft should be dry, this is why SEALS are installed at these points. They don't call 'em leakers, they call 'em SEALS! ;)

Ditto. Just replaced my rear tire and I pulled the rear end to look at the drive shaft splines. No lack of grease. I'd say that's what's doing it on mine as well.

Maybe Yamaha has been reading the posts here and thought that adding more grease at the u-joint would allow the rear splines on the shaft to get lubed regularly with the acceleration habits of our members!!

My 08 looks identical to the picks. 10k miles and climbing.
