Another thread here gave me the link to Yamaha's on-line parts catalog, so I looked up the frame numbers for an '06 ( PN 3P6-21110-00-00) and an '05 (PN 5VS-21110-00-00).

Does this mean they are different, or the same?

From what I understand of the Yammie part numbers, this means its different. Now how different, who knows. It could be they changed the powder coat color, or it could be they made major changes to it.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the rear sub-frame is significantly different, but unsure if the main frame has changed all that much. The attach points for new bodywork are likely to be different, which would obviously cause a different part number.

We know all the subframes are new because the fairings, mirror mounts, tail piece, passenger footpeg brackets, etc., are new. The forks are new but the bearings and lower triple tree might be the same (the upper triple tree being changed for the new handlebar mounts). The tank mounts higher, the side covers are different and the swingarm is longerand the venting through the steering head/cockipit area is increases, so it is possible that the frames are completely different.

vectervp1 could be onto something...it could be as simple as a powdercoat change. Until someone disassembles one and compares, we won't know for sure (Except for the Benevolent Dictator, the Keeper of All Knowledge.). Are you volunteering?

Geez, lookie who was posting while I was typing! It appears you have an answer.

I'll climb on board on this one. Yep, doggoneit the aft upper frame for the seat and tail areas is vastly different, so different that I cannot mount my Tanji fuel cell on it witout modification to the cell. Bummer, Bummer!! but can and have put my 2 Brothers pipes on it without mod.

Yeah....you like the sound of those afterburners, don't you! Are those the new "chargers" to keep your heart throbbing? I wonder what the ST1100 would sound like with a set of pipes (or is it carbureted, thus too much work)? Golly, I love spending your money! :D

I've heard a ST1300 with a Two Bro's system on it and it definately was no longer a sewing machine! Very nice sound to it. Almost as nice as my bike, but not quite.

I'll tell you what Dan, for the low low price of $1100 I'm willing to investigate this further and find out for you. :p

FyI, I have 2 Bros. titanium cans on my ST 1100 which is a 1991 with carbs and it does not sound like a sewing machine anymore and the 2 Bros. have made it quicker and better mpg, but not quicker than an FjR. It is a great bike and I really like it. Much taller gearing than either the 05 or 06 FJRs that I have.

Okay, Uncle Dave, I bow to your seniority, wisdom and character. I appeal to your grace and gentlemanly qualities for forgiveness. I luv you, man. :eh-smiley: :blushing:

Is that humble enough?

And you want humble-pie rather than Blueberry or Peach or Apricot????? :confusedsmiley:

Thats quite sufficient enough, actually would rather have banana cream above HUMBLE. Thanks.

I had an ST-1100, and it always sounded, to me, like an old two-cylinder OMC outboard motor. Two Bros mufflers made it sould like a louder outboard. I didn't like the sound at all. Are the ST1300s different?

Only that they're 200CCs more obnoxious.

Didja ever hear one of these running? Saab Sonnet....early 70's.

Two stroke V-4. Now THAT sounded identical to an OMC. :)

I hate spoiling the fun by taking this back on-topic, but the reason I ask about the frame is this: did Yamaha make changes to the FJR to get more weight on the front tire?

The wind screen (CW article) is two inches (50mm) closer to the rider. The radiator is now curved... usually that extra expense is for the purpose of getting the engine closer to the front wheel. The swing arm is longer (even if, IIRC, the wheelbase is stretched a small amount)... which would be made possible by moving the engine forward.

All these changes add up to a significantly different motorcycle... likey done to compete with the improved handling of BMW's expected release of the K12GT.
