MARYSVILLE, Wash. -- Police are searching for the driver of a motorcycle who was racing another motorcyclist early Thursday morning who was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a sport utility vehicle on Interstate 5, troopers said.
The victim, who was racing the other motorcyclist at speeds of 85 to 130 mph when he crashed, has been identified as 23-year-old Robert Hawley, troopers said.
Troopers said after the initial crash, the victim ended up on part of the roadway.
Three or four other cars then ran over the motorcycle or the victim, troopers said.
Troopers said they have good leads as they search for the other motorcycle driver.
The number of fatal crashes involving motorcycles is on the rise, troopers said.
"We take fatality rates very seriously and we're working very hard toward reducing them," said Sgt. J.R. Bussman of the Washington State Patrol. "With the high price of gas and the hot weather, they are selling more and more motorcycles and the number of accidents is going up.
