I purchased on of these (about $60 delivered) and it is a lot of fun to plot your tracks on Google earth. I also use it as my GPS receiver for my PDA:

Nice software for log retrieval (free) and better than the one that comes with the logger is available here:

Possibilities are expanded if you have cell phone coverage and a data plan. With the right software it could send SMS with your location, allow somebody to track you etc by pumping GPS info via a bluetooth connection to the gadget.

This thing locks on satellites on the most adverse conditions. I had it in my fjr topbox inside a laptop bag and it would still track under the most adverse GPS conditions.

It is not SPOT but has other capabilities.

 
Many navigators provide the same functionality and help you get where you are going at the same time . . .

Some of the cheaper ones are probably price competitive (without being waterproof, mind you).
