I don't know why, but when things go wrong, they won't when the ones that can fix it are riding. :assassin:

Last Thursday, July 24th, I took my bike in for the 8000 mile service, got new PR2s put on also but thats an other story. Picked it up on Fri. Rode it around over the weekend and up to work on Monday, no problems. Tuesday I was on my way to work and all the sudden it felt like I hit the kill switch. It did it a couple more times, not as extreme, and then it was fine the rest of the way to work. So I left work early to take it back to the dealer and it did it another 8 or 9 times on the way there, like it was out of fuel, but it wouldn't do it for them. They said that they had check some of the throttle connections and checked for codes so maybe they had fixed it. So I took it home, no problems. Then the next morning, on my way to work, it started doing it again only worst. I had cars skidding around me one time because I had no power to get out of the way. Then it kicked back in and since I had rolled on to the throttle trying to get out of the way it shot me up the interstate in to the three digits. Boy did I have some drivers cussing me. Anyway I went strait to the dealer and left it with them, reminding them that the last time they serviced it the fuel pump went out two days later, from Wed. until today. They pulled the tank off and went over the fuel system, made sure that everything was connected, rode it around and nothing. The service manager took it home Wed. and Thurs. night, nothing. He called Yamaha service to see if they had any recommendations. They hadn't heard of any problems like this so they didn't know what to say. I just don't understand. I picked it up this evening rode it around the area, no problems. Then I got out on the back rodes (minor twisties+new PR2s= another story) and *!@#$%^&* if it didn't start acting up again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing I can see that they are different from me is I take my mag mount tank bag with me. So I'll leave it on tomorrow and see what happens. I know its a strong magnet but that's nuts if that's what's causing it.

Any other ideas as to what else they could look at?

Meant to write page one of eleven pages...

BTW, before you get stuck somewhere find DCarver's great write-up of carrying some wire and basic tooling to jumper the red and brown wires.

Similar to loose battery cable symptoms as well (everything but the shooting up to 100 mph bit). Do your gauges zero out when it happens?

I had to put teflon tape on my new battery terminals to increase the diameter enough to keep the cables from slipping off. Before I figured that out, I got pretty good at pulling the top fairing bits to get at the cable ends.

Good luck and let us know what you figure out.

Every thing else is running fine while this is happening. the speed, RPMs, temp. are all still reading. This is an 07AE model so I can't pull the clutch in or it might have completely died. The first time it happened was @ 85mph in 5th, but the speed doesn't seem to matter. Tonight I was going around a tight corner at 45 and almost dropped it. When I pulled into the dealer on wed. morn it did it and it did die because I didn't have enough speed to keep it going, however it started right back up. I've been reading up about the Ing. Fail. but it doesn't seem to be the same thing.

Sliderule that is exactly what has been happening to my bike fo the last few months!!!!

It's currently in a Yama dealer so fingers crossed I'll post on the outcome. The only thing I can think of is maybe a dirty fuel filter??? anyone know how to get to one of these and how much the cost to replace as I understand it the fuel pump is attached as well!

Good luck!

Thug, the fuel filter was about the third thing on my list as I tryed to think about what could be causing this. It does feel like I'm running out of gas, and yes I check the tank, it was full. However, I just had the service done, so it would have to be a defective filter. I also keep thinking back to the fuel pump going out after the 4000 mile service. I'm so confused.

If I hadn't wrecked it when I first started riding, I might be yelling LEMON!!!

The fuel filter is part of the fuel pump assembly and the sock is not replaceable. <_<

Thug, is your FJR part of the TPS recall? Gen I only, the TPS can cause symptoms similar to sliderule's.

It is interesting that Slide and Thug have what is perceived to be fuel problems with the same symptoms because one is Gen I and the other is Gen II making the FI system quite different.

Just to throw a few things out –

The fuel delivery system is pressurized all the time, with a larger volume of gas than the injectors could possibly consume. If the supply or pressure of the fuel were to diminish there would be a brief period of poor running before flame-out. Even if the fuel pump were to shut off there would be a brief period of poor running before things came to a halt.

Can you tell if the headlights go out when the problem occurs? Can you tell if all the electrical items go out when this happens? (Probing around a possible ignition switch or loose battery terminal problem.)

Have you guys done the Barbarian thingie, perhaps leading to a loose connector at the ECU?

Then there is the oft mentioned corroded connector under the front-right of the Tee Bar.

Electrical problems cause light switch like failures - runs good or doesn’t run at all, nothing in between. Fuel problems tend to sputter before flame-out.

I concur with 'ionbeam' about the fuel filter. It's easy to suspect fuel problems but it appears to seldom be the culprit.

Back in Feb. '07 my friend called me with a running problem with his brand new '07 FJR: "I think I got some bad gas..." We all found out, many months later, that Yamaha had built-in a computer glitch.

A couple months ago, a Forum member offered here that his Gen I FJR had been afflicted with bad gas -- turns out, a while later, that a TPS solved his problem.

It sure seems like electrical issues take precedence over fuel issues? I don't think I'd rule out the, now infamous, ignition switch either.

Good Luck

This is a long shot, but here about 2 months ago Costco accidentlly put deisel in their gas tanks. They were interviewing people and some of your symptoms sounded like theirs. You haven't heard of any problems with any cars in your area?

Gents

Mines an 05 And yes I did do the barbarian thing but found out that Í didn't need to "jump" anything it's all done from the LCD panel Buttons

TPS had been done but made not difference? Maybe a faulty TPS?

Bus connectors under the T piece had a small amount of green buildup in two connectors(The white type) but cleaned

Rev's drop as indicated by the rev gauge LCD panel stays as per normal running no flicker etc Just a slight dip in the rev gauge i.e. burp....Brup ...burp..br..brp...burp....and comes good....any speed hot or cold at around 4000 RPM

Side stand has been serviced and well lubed

The surging can be quite severe at times other times it's slight.....

NO I have not filled it up with diesel! I am with respect not that much of a tool!

I had about 15 full tanks of fuel from differed locations since this issue has started.

Keep em coming

Thanks for all the ideas and please keep them coming. I am to new to motorcycles (just started riding in Nov.07) to start messing with any of the mods yet. Deff. not diesel here either. I fill up at the same station and they don't even sell diesel. Whats this about a comp. glitch, and would the dealer know about it?

As far as electrical, everything is working fine while the rough ride is going on. By the way, the 100 mph + was because I had rolled on to the throttle a pretty good bit trying to get it going and when the thing kicked back in I was on it kinda hard. And you know it doesn't take much.

Anyway, this morning I had a new symptom I think. I got on the bike in the garage started it (AE in 1st gear) started to push back out and it stalled. Tried 2 more times with the same result. So I put it in neutral, started it and let it run a few seconds then reved it up a couple times and it ran fine. In fact it ran fine for the 100 miles or so that I put on it today.

I wish I could find a way to make it reproduce on cue. Ugg...

Keep the ideas coming,I do pass them on...

Thanks again

So Monday , on the way to work, it started acting up again. You'd think it didn't want me to go to work or somthing. Anyway, that afternoon on my way back the dealer, I tried to see if maybe it would start acting up if I held it at the same speed, since it wasn't doing it after 20 min. on the road in a little traffic. 80 seems to be the speed that I'm always doing when it starts, then it doesn't matter, it happens whenever it wants after that. So I got in the HOV lane and rode at 80 for about 5 min., it started. Who's to say that it wasn't about to start anyway. It doesn't work for the tech's. Whatever, I told them I don't want it back until it's fixed. I'm problably more scared to ride now than I was after my wreck.

NO joy at my end either....They had their guru techie come through yesterday and he left scratching his head! Apparently they have had some issues with some fuel connectors and lines on some other models as I was advised. My tehcie is taking off all the plastic today and chase the wiring loom....he suggested the clutch switch as another potential culprit

How it it that I can idle it for 10 15 minutes but until I ride it there is no surging issue?

Stay tuned....

Had a talk with my Techie yesterday he says these things which is exactly what is happening....It happens around 3,500 to 4,000 RPM, (he still ***** himself when it happens) it feels like someone is switching the cut out switch on and off and on and so on...Going to change the TPS again to see if this fixes it....Yamaha are scratching their heads....I asked him if was the ECU is Yama going to pick up the bill he said he is working on that and concluded because of the condition and Low K's traveled on the bike ECU failure is not an option to fail.....Keep ya posted

My gas bill is back out the roof again, up $80 a week compared to riding my bike. I need it back. My Techs can't get it to happen for them. :assassin: Have your techs figured out how to get it to happen more regularly?
