similar thing happened about 20 years ago in Charleston WV when I was living there.

A girl riding a sportbike had a jacket on the back and it got into the rear wheel just as she was merging onto the freeway and locked the rear wheel and spit her off in traffic where she was run over and killed.

Secure your gear.

Maybe you power ranges should all start wearing beanie helmets. According to state police, his helmet saved his life!

Anybody else find this part of the report a bit confusing?

The jacket became entangled between the rear tire and fender causing the rear tire to lock up. Davidson was ejected over his handlebars and onto the freeway's gravel shoulder.

I don't see how locking the rear wheel would toss you over the bars. 'Specially on a cruzer...

yeah, more likely the back end slide out on him and he went off the side into gravel - still stinky.

It's the same principle as avoiding the use of the front brake. For sure, that will toss you over the bars. Wearing the leather jacket, rather than toting it may increase the risk of being thrown over the bars. And as DC so rightly said, make sure you're wearing the beanie helmet because it will save your life.

I guess that's a case of your gear not helping :) that almost happened to me when i was about 20. A backpack got sucked into the rear wheel. lucky it was tied on good enough to not get sucked all the way in.

Did that same exact thing one time

On my 20" Murray BMX with a sweater tied to the seat post....DOH!

Had a rear sprocket bolt back out on my '78 Yamaha 650 Special II - locked up the rear wheel at about the fastest that bike could go, 110 mph +/- (Rarely see those speeds anymore, but I was 18 years old and bulletproof at the time). I still remember the clunk, Clunk, ClunK (WTF is that noise?) CLUNK, CL...screech. Dirt bike riding experience is a very good thing sometimes - Never went down, but I rode with a flat spot on that back tire for the next couple hundred miles until I could get a new one.

Couple observations:

1. The little beanie isn't always completely useless.

2. If he didn't have two leather jackets with him that day, the one in the wheel would have been nice to have had on as he slid through the gravel.

3. Harley Davidson even makes their own tires? Or puts their name on somebody else's tires? Wonder how much extra that costs?

Same happened to me when I was on a little beauty like this....

This over 30 years ago, I had a jean jacket on the back and the sleeve got pulled into the chain and sprocket.

I thought the jacket looked pretty cool after that. Had a neat line of small holes that run up the sleeve. No damage to me or the bike.
