I've yet to read about a final drive failure on here but I still wonder. Been on the AE for about 3 months now and I've gotten so used to it that riding like a true sport bike in the twisties is not a problem, hard accels, lots of motor breaking..............and sadly to admit since I've figured it out, quite a few 1st-3rd wheelies on the AE.

I've done all the preventive maintenance per all the great write ups here on the splines etc etc etc, change the final oil every oil change and even went back twice to remove and inspect it since I started riding it a little more aggressive since this is my first shaftie.

Am I in for a premature death on the final drive? I know it's not a BMW by far but..................

Your statement there will likely be the salvation you are hoping for. Proper maintanance for the most part is the key, and given those here with more than 60k miles on the bike with no reports of failure, I would hazzard a guess to say you should be all right. Wheelies are hard on the forks too, but unless this is some kind of daily ritual for you , I'm pretty sure the FJR can take it (as long as you continue to follow up on your statement)

It's not a daily routine but I do pull a couple off on rides with groups on the weekends with very occasional ones through the week. Only twice have I not been able to power down out of one letting to forks hit a tad harder than they should. It seems as long as I'm able to power out of them the front end sets down pretty soft.

It's the final drive out of the V-Max, it will take abuse!
Seriously?

Or are you just F'n with me? If so..... :****:

If not........... :drinks:

Very seriously. Yamaha had a bullet proof design on the shelf so that made it easy. Much cheaper for them than designing a whole new setup and proven over the years.

Very nice to know BUT from what year/HP range was that final drive borrowed from?

Just remember you are not RIDING a BMW

When ridden aggressively and properly you should not have any problems, unless you forget to put oil in it :butcher:

Somewhere around here someone was doing a final drive swap to put a higher gear ratio in the Feej. I can't remember the name, a search might turn something up.

How did this get NEPRT'd? I couldn't find a single thread about this "exact" topic. Plenty of "oil" related........oh well, 106 post and my first official NEPRT.

I would be interested in this thread.... I don't care about going 150mph.... but would like a bit more torque 1st, 2nd and third B) ;) I have always liked a

lite front end, controlled by your wrist......

its similar to the V-Max but not the same as the V-Max rear end.
Lots of guys here have 10's of thousands of miles, OK, hundreds of thousands, with no failures recorded yet.
Fair enough, there is a one tooth difference:

part #

BugR's pumpkining

FJRONAMISSION, I think you want to go the other way with the gearing.

The Gen 1 intermediate drive gear-set is lower-geared than your Gen II. You could maybe gain more roll-on performance for your Gen II by replacing your taller intermediate gear-set (right-angle drive before the driveshaft) with the more performance oriented ( :) ) Gen 1 set.

A manufacturer can do many modifications to a design without it being considered a new design. Much less R&D using a proven design and modifying it for a new application.
