Normally, if he's going to GET sued, he simply waits until he is served with the lawsuit, and tenders the defense of the lawsuit to his insurance carrier (writes a letter to his insurer enclosing a copy of all he got served with, stating that he is tendering defense of the lawsuit to the insurer under policy no. xyzabc.). They then hire one of their usual insurance defense attorneys to defend the case on the insurer's dime. He should immediately report the accident to his insurer, and if he has an employer, then obviously report it to them, as well.
But since you asked, I would recommend contacting Kevin Culhane, an outstanding attorney that I used to work for 18 or so years ago. Saw him in April (he was teaching a seminar), and we commiserated about the November death of his long time partner, Hartley Hansen, who was the very best lawyer I have ever known, worked for or even seen anywhere. Kevin has a very broad litigation background, mostly defends attorney malpractice cases now, but no one could give your friend a more qualified recommendation than Kevin (he's an ex State Bar Board of Governors member, headed the discipline committee that revamped the California attorney discipline system, teaches torts and ethics at McGeorge School of Law and on and on). Hell of a nice guy, too. This may be overkill, but you won't find a much better, more ethical attorney, and Kevin can certainly refer your friend to competent help if he won't handle it:
