This looks like a resonable way to gain some extra visability. Has anybody used this product?

I have one on my '06. Because they are dual brightness for tail and brake light, I decided to wire them slightly differently than recommended. I have only the top one on as my tail light, however, both come on full brightness for the brake light. This way, instead of the person behind me having to discern whether or not the intensity changed, hitting the brakes also adds a new light (the bottom one).

Pretty visible lights too.

I recently installed a light bar like the top row on this bracket that is wired into a backoff unit. My wife was following me last week driving in the minivan, she was tired at the time after a long day. She said it made a big difference in how noticeable the brake lights were, enough of a difference that she remarked on it before I had a chance to comment. If you knew my wife you would be impressed, she rarely remarks on stuff like this.

Used to have something similar out there for Wings. Not illegal as long as they meet the rearward-facing color requirements for tail/brake lights. Never hassled the whole time I ran it on my 84 GL1200 Aspencade (through several S-central and S-Western states).

Just make sure they work like marker/tail and brake lights and you'll be fine. In Tx there's the new concern that any frame can't block any portion of the tag. It doesn't matter if it's a dealer frame of something fancy; if the tag is obscured at all, then you can be hassled and ticketed. I think they passed it in anticipation of speed cameras and all the counter measures that are out there for same.

I could be mistaken but I believe in most states these are illegal.
Really? I thought a red light is a red light, whether it is on a license plate frame or in your car's rear window. What can certainly be illegal, however, is a flashing red brake light. California DOT regulations, for instance, specify how many times it can flash for for what duration, etc... Many modules like Backoff or VisiStop can be configured or purchased to conform to these specs.

BTW, I really like these license plate frames. I got the one with a single led row from Signal Dynamics:

and drive it using Comagination's VisiStop flasher:

I wired it so that only the license plate LEDs flash. I left the brake lights alone in case the flasher ever fails.

From Comagination's product page:

"Apply your brake and your brake light(s) will immediately turn ON and then flash for about 3-4 seconds then stay ON continuously. Release your brake and apply again will cause the cycle to repeat but the flash period will be shorter depending on how long the brakes were off. A complete reset takes about 20-30 seconds. This helps prevent distracting flashing in stop & go traffic. IBF4 conforms with California DOT regulations."

I have brake lights that strobe when applied, but added a light bar similar to that just above the plate. It is supposed to work like brake lights, but I've never been able to get it to do that (I think the Tailblazers circuitry affects this). It just zig zags back and forth constantly. I've been told that it adds a lot of visibility especially at night.

I have the dual SD license plate frame with SD's modulator wired with the brake lights. Originally bought the Comagination modulator but could not get it to work with the SD frame. Maybe mine was an isolated case, but I would not recommend that combination.

I couldn't agree more, JW. If I hung out at the local bar...or even a nearby casino (and I don't gamble)...as much as I hung out here, I'd be a wealthier man.

Having said that, let me chime in on the subject at hand and say I JUST got off the phone with Ron at H&R Enterprises (Hyperlites). I had considered a license plate frame like the one from Signal Dynamics. I had one before and liked it a lot, but after reading some other recent posts about lighting up the rear and doing a little homework, I decided on the Hyperlites.

....and yes, it cost me (another) $100 :swoon:
