I read through Fred H.'s post about rekeying the lock on a helmet guardian and new that I had to do it that way myself too. Jeannette's VFR has a Helmet Guardian that I put on it and it was to wide to fit correctly so I cut off about an inch and a half and one of the locks when I installed it last year so I already had the lock. Well my 2007 Yamaha key fit into the Helmet Guardian lock so I took it to a really well stocked local locksmith yesterday who said pick it up tomorrow. Well I picked it up today and it works just fine so I now have a one key bike. I thought I would mention this because back when Fred H. did his (which looked tough to do) it sounds like the keys were not the same blank, but they are now. So $20 is all it takes, well that and Scott's mounting bracket.

In the distant past Helmet Guardian has had two styles of tumblers installed in their locks. At one point Helmet Guardian even had a check box for Yamaha style keys. About a year ago Helmet Guardian stopped offering a Yamaha type tumbler, now it looks like that may have changed again.

I also had my local locksmith fix my Helmet Guardian tumblers to accept my FJR key. In a cosmic coincidence, my factory Yamaha FJR key would open the Helmet Guardian locks, it just took a tiny bit more force than normal. The locksmith only had to change one pin a small amount to get it to work. The locksmith was amazed by how close the HG and FJR tumblers were.

I did the same thing, and got my helmet lock rekeyed. It took the locksmith about 10 minutes.

Yesterday, without thinking, I got in my Mazda Tribute and inserted my FJR key in the ignition. It went in, but would not turn. Hmmm... thinking. What would it take to have both of my vehicles operate off the same key?! (kidding)

i have a helmet guardian i do not use...

pm me if you'd like to buy mine to have re-keyed...
