I'm pushing 225#...let's just say wifey is more than that

bike has 126k miles ... 2004

I suck at smooth throttle movements...get scared in a tight turn and slam the throttle closed

Scary dragging of pegs as it squats and might cross over double yellow

but I digress

what's a recommendation on a big bang for the buck replacement shock...primary to help a sucky rider, secondary to handle two fat riders

can't afford a Race Tech or Ohlins for $1000

is there something around $500 that is for way non experts who never go to the track and just like to "cruise" the Cherohala under control by the elderly ???

If so, I'll have it shipped to my mechanic shop who replaced my stock shock (with used) a year ago and 30k miles ago

I need some other work done including a valve check since the replacement engine now has 40k miles and I'm late to the game...I also have broken pipe mounts at the centerstand <sigh>

Shock? I was going to suggest licking your fingers and sticking them in a handy electrical outlet. OR...look at the new motorcycle prices at the dealership. :eek:

Y'know, Mike, for the miles youput on your bike, why not buy another "take off" shock. There are enough owners buying aftermarket shocks that a continual supply of slightly used OEM shocks isn't a bad way to go for those who are budget-challenged.

From your description it sounds like you know better than to get overly aggressive in corners and "mom" isn't happy when you grind pegs, so take advantage of the sources here on the forum.

Broken exhaust mounts at the centerstand? Have you "bottomed out" on parking lot speed-bumps or curbed driveways? I suppose that accumulated mileage could lead to fatigue-breaks on the exhaust hangers but others have more mileage on their bikes and I don't remember a spate of posts about the issue.

well, the friggin' labor charge of changing a shock once a years plus paying somebody $100 for a used shock...I dunno

I might even go to the dark side for back tire...I've been getting 15k miles on a PR2, but tired of sweating the last couple thousand worrying it might rain...80% of my riding is with the cruise set to 79 on the slab going to and from PGR funeral missions

broken mounts...let's just say I was booking through a first time riding a Mississippi "spillway" road (spillways here in the south are gates from a river that can be opened to drain into a lake and not flood the land in the spring). this first time riding road had a concrete drainage ditch across with a slope down and up with posted 25mph...going like 50 and coming to it abruptly can, I hear, bottom out the suspension.

Was amazed it only "popped" and didn't come close to spitting me off as I became a bit airborn, pulled the front up like my dirtbike days, and hit the slope on the other side

later in the garage, as I rode up my plywood ramp to my 4" raised slab from the driveway, I heard the usual scrape coming over the hump and then a ringing bouncing sound as the metal ring broke off the left mount and upon inspection the right ring was already gone.

My mechanic dude said I should replace those mounts, but the dented header was Ok like it is :)

Just the no frills adjustable preload for when the missus is riding. The fork springs are a big help as well, without the expense of a full valving kit. When I got my setup years ago, it was considerably less than the other options on the market.

already did the fork springs thing a year ago with Race Tech group buy...had it sent to mechanic who did the engine replacement and he drained the crud out and flushed replacing the springs

the front feels much better since then

Yep! I have the one on the right, just a remote pre-load adjuster and it works well for me. I'd suggest the remote adjuster because trying to get to a "ring-type" adjuster on the FJR is waaaay difficult!

You might check on prices from the other manufacturers for their base models w/ remote preload. There will be a great difference by simply ordering a shock sprung for your body/luggage weight.

For fork springs, I had them order aftermarket springs when a fork seal was being changed. I carried the forks in and they had one apart anyway so the labor was comparitively minimal. IIRC, the springs were around $100.

 
I think the best bang would be a take off OEM shock and have someone put a new spring on it for your weight. You are going to destroy any shock if the spring is not doing its job. I know Hyper Pro will sell just springs. I think it will be the best bang for the buck.

Try Big Foot Engineering out of Boise Idaho. They custom work at reasonable prices. Find em in Google.

Just a thought...

Could a fellow, go to a salvage yard and pick up a shock off a bike.

Meaning, that item would be the last thing possibly damaged in a get-off?

So, they probably have some nice performance shocks; that just needs servicing.

 
I have a Works Performance Durasport with the reservoir but the one without is $635. They install the the springs based on your weight and load. The hardest part of the intall was removing the old shock and the extra parts. It has worked very well and handles very good. They are also rebuildable.

Anybody have a spare, worn stock shock laying around that I can pay for you to have it shipped to Sasquatch to be rebuilt.

Your shock will be rebuilt and sent to me.

My local shop will install it and remove my old shock which I will then promply ship to you.

This is on my Gen I '04, and I'll sent you back my currently installed stock shock (with 40k miles on it)

You will end up with my current stock shock and out no $$$ at the end

I would truly be thankful

Not sure what your timing is, I am in process of upgrading mine. Should have done it this winter but oh well. If I go aftermarket vs rebuild I would do the swap you suggest. I'll know which way I am going by the end of the week of the 4th April.

thanx anyway, but weeks ago a forum bud sent in his spare stock shock off of TWN's bike and it was rebuilt and sent to my Cycle Repair Shop, Graves Cycle Repair in Tylertown, MS

total work I want done will take him keeping the bike Mon-Fri and I still don't have 5 days in a row to be out of my bike.

I will report back how I like the shock after some miles.

I regret I didn't post in this thread that I was already taken care of.

Too bad you went that way Mike. Currently there is a Wilbers shock for sale on the forum for $500.
