Was modifying the throttle return spring and decided I did not like the mod. Here is the post with some background (here)

But in trying to rewind the spring back around - the tool I was using (7" straight coat hanger with a hook on the end) slipped out of my hand and slithered down into the inner reaches of the motor area and I have no idea where it is.

This pic shows where I lost it:

Basically it fell in about the location of the cruise control chain.

I think I can probably find it by taking out the airbox and air filter case. Is this a lot of work?

Let me ask a few other loaded questions:

If I took it to the dealer - after they laughed their ***** off - how much do you think it might cost to find this bloody tool?

Is it difficult to remove the fuel rail (thinking this might help) if I needed to?

I don't even want to ask if its OK to leave it in there. Because I gotta get out there. Just does not sit right with me.

Thanks Mates.

The FJR Work On Your Own Bike Gods  are not smiling on me right now. I truly am being persecuted.

Does it really matter?

What is the worst thing that could happen if you left it there?

Assuming you can't actually see it; it is highly unlikely that it will interfere with the throttle/cruise control, gravity is going to help it to drop out on the road at some stage.

If it were me (and I definitely couldn't see it) I would just button her up, and go for a ride.

Have you tried one of those retractable tools with a magnet on the end? You can get them cheap at any auto parts house, and they can come in handy often!

Been there, done that. Those tend to be head scratcher moments where you just stare into space.

I'd get your best flashlight and one of those long skinny magnets on a flexible stick and start fishing. If it fell in, it should come out.

As for that Pic....does taping Head Lettuce to a TB help to increase performance?

1) Why do you have lettuce on top of each of your throttle bodies?

2) There is a black hole under the TBs where anything you drop will end up. That's it's purpose.

3) You can remove the air box and TBs. It is a pain and will take some time and patience.

+1 on the magnetic tool?

Because I'm a BIG believer in the "Unintended Consequences" theory of luck, I'm thinking the worst thing that could happen is to have the piece of coat hanger fall out, get embedded in the rear tire, and cause serious problems when you least need/want them... but that's just me!

The suggestions to try retrieving it with a flexible magnet sound like your best bet.

Let us know how it all turns out!

Then again, it might show up when you need it!

I'm reminded of a situation I was in....shorthand of it....400 miles from home in Bumfuk, CA pulling a trailer with my ATV & Hunting Gear. Unbenounced to me, lower bolt of 2 on front right brake caliper gets legs and dissappears while driving hundreds of miles on the I-5. First stop I make is on offramp, apply brakes, terrible noises, then BOOM, my front tire explodes...or so I thought. Brake caliper torqued forward into alloy wheel and like a lathe, cut that wheel in two halves. Gotta limp it to the nearest town on spare but HAVE to tighten that 1 caliper bolt or I'm stranded for hours on end in 102* heat. NO TOOLS! Drop spare from under truck and what falls out with spare? ....an 18mm box-end Craftsman wrench that I had lost after looking for hours when I installed new shocks on the truck about a year prior! UNBELIEVABLE! It's the size of the Caliper Bolt! Tightened caliper, installed spare, and limped on the E-Brake 15 miles to podunk town where I ended up getting new bolts......with LOCKTITE!

It's very unlikely that it could come out.

Here's what it looks like with the air box out:

Getting to this point is not easy the first time, but I can get there, and the throttle bodies off, in under an hour now, as many times as I did it during my starter issues. Your piece is probably in the space you still can't see, even in this pic, and it's not gonna just roll out of there by itself.

If you have to have it, get to this point and then remove the throttle bodies, and there it will be. While the throttle bodies are in your hand, you ought to be able to make quick work of that spring thing, too. :)

Zenwhipper - Can you access it from the side, or I should say look in from the side? ... Right side of motor, over the clutch area... maybe pull the side fairing off, that's quick and easy.

Another great tool that everyone should have is a telescoping magnet with a swivel, similar to the one pictured below. I got mine at Harbor Freight. You could start fishing for it so to speak, or if you see it, retrieve it.

Mission accomplished. :yahoo:

Returned spring to normal position started it up and all was great. I was like yes, step one done. Now how to get that wire out and and then all of sudden clink... what was that? Under the bike on the floor... the lost piece of wire!!!!!!!!!! By the look of wfooshee's pic, I think it went into the tranny case area - far enough back that gravity and vibrations went to work and dislodged it.

Wow... this was one painful journey. The wife just shakes her head. And wants to thump me :black eye:.

Mucho mucho gracias for the help mates!

Scott

Good for you scott! :yahoo: I was going to ask, "did you look on the floor", but I thought you'd probably done that already.

You one lucky dawg. Now go buy a lottery ticket and really win! ;)
