So every year Sudbury has a toy ride the weekend after the Labour Day long weekend. Right. Today. I haven't missed a Toy Ride in perhaps 10 years. Its the one ride I make absolutely sure I don't miss.

Today, is the first time I'm missing it and I feel just sick about it. Oh, I registered and made a donation, but I refuse to ride it.

See, a few years ago, we got a new Police Chief. In his very first public address he declared 'All bikers are scum'. Thats a pretty broad statement. Within a month, a police crackdown was in affect for bikes with loud pipes. It got so bad, they were even ticketing guys with unmodified STOCK pipes. Did it reduce the number of loud bikes on the road? No. Not one bit.

Fast forward a couple of years to the Toy Ride last year. After dropping off all the toys I left the site only to run a gauntlet of 4 or 5 'presences' within about 5km. Fine. Except they weren't pulling over cars. Only bikes. Not loud bikes, mom and pop who go for a ride once a year. Bone stock. I was outraged by this and let the organizers know my displeasure.

Tick the clock ahead one year. Inco Hospice Ride which raises money for Palliative Care locally. Despite having a parade license (which effectively allows you to make as much damn noise as you want), the police escort wrote tickets for loud pipes at an intermediate stop. Their was almost a riot by those in attendance. In fact, some of the police officers (their were 4 in there) refused to be part of it and sat in the car while their coworker(s) were complete ********. Much bruhahah in the media afterwards. We donate our time and money in a legal fund raiser and this happens. Ludicrous. Since then, because of the outcry the police refuse to provide any escort whatsoever. In fact, you cannot even get a parade license anymore if you so much as mention 'motorcycles'.

Flash forward to today.

Its beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky, temps in the mid 70F's. Normally, the toy ride is the largest charity ride of the year, bringing somewhere in the neighbourhood of 350 - 450 bikes out. Even when its cold'n crappy. Today, perhaps 100 bikes. Before the start of the ride they addressed the participants. This is a 'Ride' not a 'Parade'. Their is no police escort. Then explained briefly why. Mr. ******* yells out, whats wrong with my pipes - then proceeds to let loose all the fury his unmuffled HD can manage. *******.

So, attendance is down to those who aren't active in the local biker community because they simply didn't know. No escort, one police officer as a presence (not officially, donated time) and a whole bunch of needy kids who'll get nothing under the tree this year.

Sickening.

Well now, if it's the OPP in your area Steve I would contact directly to Police Chief Jullian Fantino. The cops in our province are turning into tax revenue collectors. It starts at the top though.

Also loud pipes are causing more than their fare share of trouble for ride organizers. Oh well.

I hope you are sending a like letter to the local newspaper and the town council/mayor.

Personally, I'd voice my displeasure at loud exhaust on motorcycles and the need to control noise pollution in your area (including loud automotive exhaust and amplified music). Expound upon your choice to ride your motorcycle in OEM condition (as a responsible citizen).

I'm sure they feel you could donate money and toys without the fanfare of a motorcycle gathering, and they'd be right. Too many of the "bad attitude" motorcycle riders use thes organized fund raisers as an excuse for their behavior the other 364 days of the year.

Too bad.

Nope Sudbury Regional. But it has spread to other Municipalities (North Bay won't provide escorts any longer either). Oh you can bet their will be a lot letters/emails written in the next few days to Mayors/Police Chiefs/MPP's etc. Basically, the 2 wheel community, through all of the local clubs (SCRC, Freedom Riders, Hog etc) are going to make sure the public knows that a very small percentage of the riding public are causing persecution of regular law abiding citzens, and, the genuinely needy in the community.

Uhm, guys.. This thread isn't about loud pipes. It's about the consequences of enforcement of those with the pipes. Who would have thought that cracking down on 'excessive noise' would ultimately harm little kids in need.

I've been saved! :yahoo:

I was saved yesterday on the way home from work when I passed a V-twin cruiser on the highway. :clapping:

I was saved again today (Re-born-again?) on my shopping trip when two Harley Davidson's turned onto an on ramp and brapped themselves up to merge speed.

I feel sooooo much better I might become an evangelist for their lifestyle and go around saving lives. ;)

I wonder how many lives are saved at 2:00 AM when they're leaving the bar and brapping their way down the boulevard?

"In his very first public address he declared 'All bikers are scum'." Wonder if he'd be offended if someone made the public statement that "All police are Gestapo"???

Sounds to me like a classic example of a few bad apples making it bad for everyone else, compounded by an inexcusable over reaction from the law enforcement community. It's a damn shame kids have to lose out because of it.

I'm aware that this is about the noise on parades and I feel your pain, and the pain of the kids that aren't going to get anything for Christmas this year because people insist on forcing there ideas of a nice sounding motor/exhaust/song on other people that have absolutely no interest in whatever it is being forced upon them. It does piss me off that people have the loud pipes save lives mentality. It's a sad state when the police will do selective enforcement of the laws just to try and curtail the noise emitted by a small percentage of the motorcycles without enforcing the same noise limits on the others in the motoring community. You should send your story off to the local media, and to the AMA. The AMA can, and probably will attack this with full force.

for the most part, a little noise helps if you can stand it. the fjr even with headers is quite subdued compared to a 19th century relic with open plumbing. some v-twin forums must be selling their own cordless sawzalls by now. made by ryobi, of course.

in areas where the 4 wheeled public refuses to share, you suddenly find you are the gd troublemaker they were after.

yeah right.

LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES!!!!
YOUR LOUD PIPES MAY LOSE OTHER BIKER'S RIGHTS!!

I really hope reecbike is kidding. :dribble: :dribble: Anyway here's what I tell/ask my new riders in regards to this (Yes I know most of you know this already). "Isn't the LOUD noise from the pipes behind you? Where do most crashes happen? Yes that's right, they happen in front of you, so how do loud pipes save lifes then? They don't!!".

By the way, IMO there's nothing wrong with a good sounding baffled aftermarket pipe.

I'd be carrying around some sort of decibel meter, make sure that whoever is with me is within the standard, and organizing a weekly ride around police headquarters. Every week, for two hours, ride circles around police headquarters, with a tool and knowledge that you are within the legal tolerances for noise pollution.

Continue with a "See you next week" until the police chief publicly admits that not "all bikers are scum", and loosens up a bit. ESPECIALLY on stock bikes.
