OK- I have a cruiser with aftermarket pipes, specifically to make my bike sound obnoxiously loud, secondarily to increase HP. Because the

pipes - DG Hard Krome kickers, on a Honda Sabre VT1100C2 are loud, people in the hermetically sealed $50K cross-purpose vehicles, with ac/cd/gps/

espresso machine/laptop/video screen(s), very dark windows, and blind spots the size of Rhode Island - save my ass sometimes in traffic-and this is at

red lights. Remember, these mugs can't hear or see, they're preoccupied, and also want your lane, and don't care.

I blip the throttle, they spill hot coffee on their lap (my pipes are LOUD) and at least I get noticed, and not cut off, I goose it and get the hell out of the

intersection/on ramp/you name it.

I want an exhaust system on my soon to be bought FJR that will give some attention to the fact I'm in traffic, too. Not straight pipes- something well-tuned

that will give me a few extra HP- and give a nice, rich, burble of HELLO PLEASE DON'T RUN ME OVER. Simple request; I know that translating v-twin sound

to 4 cyl will give different sound, and will gladly trade just to keep riding defensively and continue being safe. Bright lights, loud horns, and relatively loud

pipes do save lives- IMO. Maybe tunable pipes? Quieter in the country, where I ride 80% of the time, loud in the city?

HELP this is a serious determining factor in buying the FJR; I've had sport-touring bikes sneak up on me in traffic while in my car, and the lack of noise

is very scary-and I look for 'cycles. Please give me a few words of advice?? thanks ideaguy

A far better solution.

Man Horns.

Can be heard far better than loud pipes....probably by 30 decibels. It makes people think they're about to be hit by a '74 Buick.

ideaguy - Don't think you are going to get much love around here when it comes to this topic. I would venture to guess you will be in the very small minority. Most around here feel the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" claim to be utter and total bullshit. And not only an affront to our personal senses, but a major contributor to non-riders hatred of motorcyles and something that will eventually come back to hurt all riders.

Here is a recent topic a long the same lines.........

Clicky HERE.

I like the added sound my Holeshot slip-on exhaust give my FJR, but they are relatively tame in the great scheme of things. At least compared to the fukin open pipes that most of the dimwit cruiser crowd run. For a lot of sound on the FJR, you will need to remove the catalytic converter by purchasing either the Muzzy or Holeshot header system combined with their louder slip-on exhaust. That will definitely get you some sound. Not as much as the open pipe V-Twins, but more than many around here can stomach.

There. I was nice. :)

Sort of.

+1 for Iggy's solution.

Loud pipes piss everyone off. Better to work on your riding skills and learn to read traffic.

There's only about 8,000 other things to make you less conspicuous, than loud pipes.

The only people that hear them are those behind you, and they aren't the ones you need to worry about

+1. Couldn't have said it better...or nicer....sort of.

if you're looking for hp increase, consider exercising. this isn't an attempt to insult you, i have no idea how much you weigh. but i believe the formula is every 10 lbs. shed = 1 hp gained. lose some weight, get healthy, and gain hp. ( :

You've been used to riding a cruiser with straight pipes and you are concerned about ADDING horsepower to an FJR?

Stock mirrors on the FJR, even on the newer years, pretty much suck. Save your pipe money and buy some better mirrors. Unlike the cruiser, you are going to need good mirrors to see everything that is so far behind you.

Having an STD is not so bad. You'll learn to love it. (Save The Decibels) :yahoo:

well, first off, the I-4 on the FJR is never going to "burble" like a cruiser so forget that.

The Leo Vince slip-on exhaust cans do make the FJR (my bike) sound very nice with the silencers in them and just LOUD without them.

No wonder that 8 year old on the FJR spanked me! Little shit probably only weighed 65 pounds.... and I thought he was just a better rider... sheesh..

Actually I was led to understand that it's 7 lbs to 1 hp (which is the approximate the weight of 1 gallon of fuel)....& no I can't remember whether it was a u.s. gallon or an imperial gallon  ......

Way to hang ideaguy.. stirring up the hornets nest and all.. :yahoo:

PM Fairlaner to see what he's running. Them pipes are LOUD baby. Too loud for me. The sound like sheep's blaaaaaping.

Regarding your 'loud pipes save lives', around these parts you'll be dog piled, even if what you say is true. On my moderately loud Ultra Classic, I know people hear it idling because they actually swivel their heads and look, yes, even the ones ahead and beside, not just behind me. That does not occur when riding a quiet bike.

OTOH, the noise does piss other folks off, so it's a dangerous trade off IMHO. I have no plans of making my feejer noiser. I like the fact I can warm the bike up early in the AM and note wake the neighbors; or ride through a camp ground late at night and not wake good folks up. Most of my riding is NOT in the city, so I'm not as at risk as true urban riders are.

Enjoy the dog pile noobie!

IMO, Loud Pipes don't save lives they just keep you from hearing the train that is about to hit you!!!!!!!

Obnoxious Sh*t!!!

"idling", as in, when not moving and the sound wave is relatively circular around your position.

when moving, that sound wave is eliptical around your position with little getting out ahead of your always-changing current position. like a comet's tail, the sound trails mosly behind you; saving the lives of the annoyed people stuck behind you.

You're better served with riding skills, awareness, and good riding gear.

BTW: I stick with my original observation this this is some stinky shi... bait.

Dont run off "IdealGuy" you've just entered another dimension in motorcycle riding. Most everyone here is focused on performance and riding efficiency, for the all day, multi day rides. So take a look around, see if you can make one of the many group events that are posted and get ready to ride. Most everyone I've rode with so far like to ride at a "non-leisurely" pace. If your up for it, its great fun!
