Villages have been evacuated in the middle of the night in Yorkshire and the M1 has been closed (major North South motorway). Cracks have appeared in a dam and some of the banking collapsed as the dam reaches cpacity.

Three people have died, a 68 year old man and a 13 year old boy were swept away and a 28 year old got his foot trapped in a drain and despite efforts by firemen could not be pulled free in time. What a terrible way to die.

I've been following the news from back home, via daily emails from my Mom, and a link to the local paper. The 28yr old man who drowned was just a few miles from my hometown of Hull, Yorkshire.

Hull is not the worst hit, but has suffered the worst flooding in living memory. I spoke to my sister-in-law a few days ago. She has four inches of water in her kitchen but is covered by insurance for any damages done. Several of her friends nearby still have waist high water in their homes, and are not insured.

The local paper mentions ten thousand homes with flood damage. Since the area is economically depressed, many people don't have insurance. I don't remember insurance being a condition of holding a mortgage, especially flood insurance.

My family have stayed dry, so far. My parents were summoned to their Church in the middle of the night to help lift the Church Organ out of its pit, which was filling with water. They are watching, and waiting for the rains to abate.

As one who saw the damage water can do during the Mississippi River flood of 1993, I feel for you guys. I hope the effects don't last as long as it did here.
