Does anyone here have medical coverage with their motorcycle policy? My wife and I had s bad accident, and for 18 months, it has all come out of our pocket (co-pays and the 4 grand we have to spend a year before BC/BS starts paying 80%) This is very unlike with a car policy where all my medical was picked up and they went after the other person to get paid. Accident was not our fault, but we can't get reimbursed until we sign off on having no more claims. So, that long winded story is to show why we are thinking of getting medical on the bike policy. Anyone else have that?

I don't have it on mine either. My insurance agent here in PA has told me that first party medical coverage is not available in our state. Passenger is covered but not operator. You may want to check for yourself. Sorry to hear of your misfortunes.

My MC insurance comes with $1000.00 medical coverage and I have not looked into increasing it and a grand doesn't go far as you have found out. My regular medical insurance paid for everything after the first grand last fall when a deer knocked me off my bike.

We added enough $s to cover both of our co-pays if it came to it. We ended up in an accident last September and the wife suffered a bad leg break. We have been having a harder time getting our medical insurance provider (Humana) to process our primary claim correctly. Have no issues with the bike insurance provider as they continue to call and want us to begin the process of filing our claim with them (which we cannot do until we get the primary one straightened out). I can tell you I really hate dealing with these insurance clowns (but that's a story for another thread).

I carry a high amount of medical insurance with my MC policy. It cost me but then again we are on a motorcycle with no protection other than the clothes we wear. Only makes common sence to me. A med flight alone must cost 10K I bet. I drive fast most the time so when I do bite it it is going to hurt. Yes I also have good insurance from work I pay an arm and a leg for.

JMO,

Dave

My wife checked her bike policy (Progressive) and they will add medical for her, and we are in PA....just an FYI.

I stupidly never thought too much about all this.....was riding 40 years without any street accident (Track...well.......)

Thanks for all the thoughts on it....as soon (if) I get the ok to ride, I will talk to a broker to se what he has to say. We have learned way more about insurance than I ever wanted to know.

BullBBX, good luck with yours. I understand and sympathize.

Dave, I am actually thinking of finding private insurance. I have spoken to a few folks that have bought better insurance privately (still major companies, but better coverage) that they had at work. And most pay less! Our company insurance is really getting bad. I don't think I would mind paying what I do if the coverage were good. Also, getting a coy of my work policy (changed this year) to see if I am covered on the bike is turing into a fight.

Thanks again to all for your thoughts and experiences.

I'm not aware of any motocycle insurance that includes

medical coverage for the rider. Passenger yes, rider no.

That should be covered by your regular medical insurance.

I not sure how you got motorcycle insurance without

liability for a passenger???

I may have said this before but it bears repeating:

your wife needs to retain a lawyer and sue your insurance

company for her medical expenses. It may be the only

way to get them to pay.

Maybe if they carry you under the wing of a Steerman Biplane. Seven years ago I was air evaced from Fairbanks to Anchorage.... $30,000. It was covered 100% by my health insurance, thank heavens.

Med flights are around $25-30K easy... when I went to New Zealand last month for a riding vacation, I purchased a policy with MedjetAssist. It's good anywhere in the world to get you home. For $260, imo, it's a no brainer especially if you travel far from home.

Just a quick showed this at Allstate:

We have a lawyer...my expenses already maxed out insurance, and we are stuck unless we go after the driver. Your healthcare CAN exempt coverage for activities....such as motorcycling, horseback riding and skydiving. So you need to make sure that you have coverage there. The bad part for us is that we are covering a lot of out of pocket, and since it happened in Minnesota, their law is we get payed back when we are done. So for 18 months so far, we covered everything that was not covered by insurance. The reason we are talking about getting medical on the bike insurance like a car policy is to cover us if this should ever happen again. We are out of pocket for me over 30,000 so far.

Dave, you have medical on your bike insurance, if you don't mind my asking, who are you insured with?

Thanks again for all the input folks.

Progressive,

I live in Massachusettes so no telling if its mandatory to have it. We are a funny state sometimes. Well most of the time. Someday I am going to purchase a ticket out of here.

Thanks Dave, my wife has them so we will check it out. BTW....last time I was up in Mass, the roads up there were getting as bad as PA!

Maybe it's mandatory here in NC but my Progressive policy has "bodily injury liability" at "$100,000 each person". My agent says that includes the rider.

I'm usually not one to rush to judgement, but that's not what

liability insurance is for.

I'd find another agent.

Ok, to clarify a little more:

"Liability Insurance" provides compensation to persons injured

BY YOU.

"Medical Coverage" and "Personal Injury Protection" ( PIP )

are separate coverages to compensate to injuries TO YOU,

often by your own actions.

I have a huge umbrella policy ($1M) that extends forth from when my insurance policy stops....

I co-ordinated this with my insurance agent - the umbrella requires that you have certain coverage for your motorcycle and auto policy....

Might want to check into that if you have it available to you...

To me it was a no brainer and though I have never had to delve into such a realm - I will continue to pay for it, if not for me - the loved one on the back is my responsibility.

Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts and ideas. It seems at minimum I have 6 months before I can think about riding again, and want to have this all figured out beforehand. Between everyone here, and I do know a very good insurance agent that is a customer where I work....I MAY get this all figured out!
