Thanks for the info bigjohn!
<snip> Speaking of which, the only differences I can tell the B spec provides is about $15 more in cost and some extra required cursing while mounting. I have yet to notice a difference in handling or tire wear.
Rich speaks the truth. After many, many sets used by the PNW crew, the standard PR2 rear does it just as well as a "B" spec. Doesn't seem to matter if you're 1-up, 2-up or towing a trailer...mileage is very similar between both.

I have yet to find a tire that I can like throughout its life. I suppose I have used more PR2ès than anything else. I get pretty good life out of them (maybe 12,000 miles or so), but from about 5000 miles onward I don't like them very much. More pronounced trapezoidal wear than any other tire I have tried. Might play around with some non-dual-compound tires next. I would endure somewhat less life in favour of more consistent wear pattern and decent handling up until its time to replace. No problem with the PR2 rear tires although I may be venturing back to the Darkside for awhile this season. (Been there before and didn't hate it)

Ross, I suffered through several sets of PR2s. I was never

enamored by their inability to hold a steady line through a

bumpy corner.

Take heart, there are viable alternatives.

I had an affinity for Pirelli ST/GTs for awhile but the current

object of my affections is the BT-023 GT, recently replaced

by the T-30.

This tire has completely neutral handling, is rock steady in

corners and reasonably long life. I'll never miss the PR2s.

The downside is the limited tread life and they are a ***** to change by hand. Even with a mojolever. (Very stiff bead)

I'm in the market for tires. The set of T-30s I put on after SEO last year went 6300 or so miles, and the rear is pretty smooth, the front to the wear bars. It's a tough decision as I want some more miles in anticipation of cross country trips this year.

I think I'm going with either the PR2 or PR4 rear and a T30 front. I loved the turn-in on that tire, and it's a bunch less expensive at under $100. Now to figure out if the PR4 is worth $40 more than the PR2.

Rear - PR2Front - BT023 GT

My favorite combo, well at least today.

Mine too. But the BT023GT is now unobtanium in 120/70-17.

I think with the loss of the BT023GT front, the T30-GT may be the front tire of choice to match up with a Michelin Pilot Road. And yes, that price tag does make it very nice.

I kind of doubt that it is. But the (regular) PR4 rear is only about $20 more than a PR2 rear and the PR4 GT rear is about $30 more (based on prices from Jake Wilson)

Order placed for a Michelin PR4GT rear at 190/55-17 and Bridgestone T30 front. Price is $289.98 for that set. I've really wanted to try the larger rear tire, and for some reason the PR2 was only available as a 190/50-17.

Hopefully this will be that magic set with great handling through the life of the tire, and long life.

Thanks Tom. One more PR2 left for me...

Btw, I just ordered a T30 front for my trip up to SE Ohio. I am not sure the Pilot Power fronts that Wayne convinced me to try for the pure mountain riding around here would last to Ohio and back.

...and Lord knows Wayne gives me a bunch of undeserved razzing for using my tires to the full extent.

Well, he transports his bike on a trailer right?

While may Wayne sightings are few and far between, he always seems to be close to some kind of tire trouble or another. Don't let him worry you as long as he has a ride. Besides, you're not the only one using up tires.

Is there something wrong with running them till the chords show???

Don't know....never happened.
OK Pinocchio, we almost believe you.
Someone post up a picture of my tire with some big *** steel showing and I will own up to it.

It seems that people get caught between tires now and then. One time, I was looking thin on the back tire and modulated my rubber burning accordingly ...and made it the 500 miles back home no problem.

oh, and there was that other time I was aggressive down on push mtn in Arky, and made it back home no problem.

oh, and there was last September when I figured I would ride with my friends, ride home, change the tire, and be back to ride some more. THAT time I chose not to take the squirrelly roads down the mountain to get home. I paid the price for having to install an overly expensive tire. I rolled the dice and lost.

But I don't think there are any other times...

Front T30 Gt fronts ordered last week to go with my PR2 rear, so no need to worry bout me, umm-kay?

WTF- why in hell did this go to NEPRT?

Factual information from a good source, of interest to many and often incorrectly reported that this tire is out of production.

BTFOM
