I was thinking I need a Power Commander. How much of a mileage penalty will I pay for installing such a thing? I live at about 2500 feet if that matters.

I have been using one since my FJR had about 500 km on her. Since the bike was new and still breaking in I did not take any fuel mileage readings so I don't have a baseline. It had quite a bad surge at low rpm/light throttle before the PCIII. For the last many thousands of km I consistently get 20-22 km/L or 47-52 mpg. So, going by what others have stated they get I don't seem to be 'suffering' at all. I am using the Wally Kilburg smoothness map. I am generally happy with this one.

Wally's map

A (very) simplified explanation of what the Power Commander does is that it richens the lower rpm/small throttle opening parts of the fuel injection map and leans the upper rpm/large throttle opening parts.

I have played with some of the low rpm settings to lean it out a 'tich', but occasionally go back to the original 'Wally', just to try. If you have a laptop (or a desktop in the garage  ) it is easy to fiddle with it. It is real easy to go back to a 'working' map if you really screw up.

Some have had good results with the Barbarian jumper mod and then the CO adjust without going to the PCIII. Although, some state mileage drops this way, too.

Barbarian Jumper mod

Have fun, grab it and play with it.

My '08 FJR was getting 42 - 43 before the PCIII and I'm getting 37 - 38 now with the Muzzy 4 into 1 exhaust system and the Muzzy provided map.

The improvement in drivability is well worth the 5 mpg loss in mileage. The stock off-idle throttle response was jerky and required too much attention.

Before the the PCIII I got between 40 and 50 MPG. My riding style ususally keeps me near the 40MPG. After installing the PCIII and the Wally Smoothness map and several 1,000+ mile road trips, I averaged 30MPG. Recently I purged the Wally Smoothness and re-installed the Basic Gen I map. So far it's reading better mileage. I'm assuming I'll be back to the 40+MPG range.

Wally Smoothness was VERY smooth, but sacrificed an engine that would otherwise be twitchy, awnry and more willing to jump the gate running. However, I do believe it lost MPG for a more sedate and refined machine.

Hope this helps

I think a lot of it depends on you. When you install it you will want to think it is more powerfull and therefore twist the grip a bit more and get worse milage. When I had mine installed, it was set up on a dyno with the right software and a trained operator. I told them I was interested in keeping my 50mpg cruise and 50k later I still get right around 50 mpg if I am riding in an adult manner. If I get other than adult the milage will drop to 43-45 mpg.

I have had a PCIII on my 03 since they came out. I installed quite a few maps from this site before the holeshot full system. Some worked and some didn't. Squeeze out mpg's and get leaner or richen it up and get less. After the Holeshot full install I put it on the dyno and got a custom map. Pretty even across the board with emphasis in the mid range and cruising. really smooth. I dropped about 10%. In Ca. with Ca. gas 40-42 and out of Ca. 42-44 with a high of 46 riding tank to tank easy cruising with the fuel cell. In the commute I get around 38-40. Completely stock I used to get 43-45 in Ca.
