Motorcops in Presidential motorcade crash

Seems that 3 motorcycle LEO's in the presidents motorcade went down in Hawaii today due to slick pavement. Makes me wonder if they hit the icelike painted portions of the road. Seems that one is in serious condition and the other two were treated and released.

Judging by the heaps at the side of the road they looked like full dress Harleys. The news showed the cops sitting up in the grass median waiting for some help to arrive.....doesn't he travel with a plethora of medical help??

Interesting that when it was reported in our area the news feed on the radio included the final line stating "the president was not delayed by the accident..." as if that was the most important thing on everyone's mind. Obviously the pres didn't stop although supposedly the paramedics traveling with the convoy stopped to render aid per the report.

When I rode "for work" we did several escorts around the state for the Prez and other VIPs over the four years I was on the bike. The President and Vice President's motorcade would not even think of stopping if one of us went down. There was an ambulance in the procession, but it was for the package. We began to bring another ambulance for one of us if needed.

I would think the last thing the secret service would allow would be to stop. Can you imagine if the only thing someone had to to to stop/trap a VIP was to throw some oil in front of the escort?

Maybe I was unclear. I wasn't suggesting that the President should stop - that would comprimise the whole detail. However, I always thought that since we were out there racin' around to open up roads for him, sometimes in the middle of the night, sometimes in the middle of rush hour, the decent thing to do would be for the President and his detail to include another ambulance in the procession for the local law enforcement or anyone else if it was needed.

The last thing I would want is Bill ******* putting direct pressure on any part of my body if I went down and hurt myself. :blink:

I just saw the daughter of the patrol officer who was most seriously hurt on CNN appealing to people to donate blood. CNN reported that the family has received get well wishes "as far away as the White House".....imagine that. Evidently his body slid and impacted a lampost.

The one pictured is a BMW. Slick roads "bit" him, what a shame. At least the medics peeled off to help. We forget that even "parade duty" is dangerous to those among us who have volunteered to serve.

It's a sad day when something like this happens and made more tragic by the holidays the family will "endure" rather than celebrate with happiness and joy.

We've been on BMWs since 1997 and every model purchased by the Oregon State Police since day one has included ABS. I can't imagine why theirs would not have, too.

Yup, can't imagine the crash was any type lack of skill. I got my first motorcycle license while living in Hawaii back in '77. Very tough m/c test (esp. compared to Calif.), and the Honolulu PD motor officers are respected for their abilities. Just a bad combination of slick roads (it rains on and off daily there) and out-of-ordinary federal escort duties I assume.

If you saw the video of the crash, you would realize that ABS would have done NOTHING to avert it. The guys lowsided while riding to the left of the motorcade as it rounded a right hand turn. The pavement was crowned in the center-- as opposed to being superelevated-- and the cross slope of the pavement worked against them. The bikes hit a curb and continued onto a grass surface.

Bringing ABS into the discussion is a red herring. It was a simple case of not enough traction in the rain.

Improperly shaped pavement, spilled gasoline and spotty rain is what got me.... watch for it.
