In California anyway I notice all they wear is a half Helmet? I'm just curious why they don't wear leathers or some other kind of safety gear, all I ever see them wear is a cop shirt and pants, I think they do wear boots? Good Insurance?... :D

As long as I'm on this soap box :D something else I notice, CHP's ALWAYS give me the Eye? Is it because I'm on a sport style bike, or they just don't like bikers?

Or are they wanted a FJR? :D I don't think CHPs like bikers, If I had to guess.

Anyone have comments on either of these subjects? :dribble:

There was a recent MCN article...

Basically, the motorcops feel they have enough safety gear. Boots, gloves, armor chest and back guard, 3/4 helmet. They don't want the full protection of MC style pants and jackets as they feel they'll be too hot and foot chase performance would be severely hindered. As for open face helmets they feel that if they go to close faced they'll loose that 'personal' contact with the public. Plus, too many off/ons during traffic stops, I'd guess.

As far as getting the 'eye'... bags on, never. Bags off, mostly.

Bags on, full 'Stitch - CHP bikers sometimes even wave. Anything less, I get the "eye" too.

Not only would they miss the "personal touch", I'm sure there would be some difficulty using their communication equipment with a full-face helmet.

Personally, if I were them, I'd try to get some sort of arm protection, like a mesh jacket. I hate to think of shoulder & elbow bones ground off on the pavement.

Negitive on the full face equipment...and as far as other helmets most coppers here wear flip BMW style helmets.

Why would you run when you had a bike to use? and if you get to a fence isn't that what the pistolie is for? :D

Sounds like a crock to me...any excuse to wear as little as possible.

But Jethuth! Have you theen their great big thilly bitheps?! Oh my gawd, their tho thexy! :****:
It's not so much that harley riders wear chaps that bothers me, it's when they don't wear anything except for chaps. :puke:

Maybe it's 'cause they know that they can't keep up with you.

A new "first" for me:

I got stopped by a San Mateo, CA moto LEO for doing 55 in a 35. After the obligatory "no way I was going that fast, officer" and started digging for my license. He started laughing and said he just wanted to take a look at my bike. WTF? So we both started laughing and he said to take it easy, that damn thing has way too much horsepower.

I said, "Are you a tourer?"

He said, "Well, kinda. That's my touring bike," and pointed to his HD behind me.

I smiled and said, "Well, what can I say? It's a Harley."

He said, "Yeah. I know what you mean. Have a nice day. And take it easy!"

Yowzzuh!

Here in Missouri, IMO the LEO's don't look at me a hard when I have the bags on my bike. I guess they think it is some older man out for a tour. With the bags off, I always get the EYE!!!

True story..

In 1974 got a radar ticket for doing 82 mph on my 28 hp R60 /2 Bmw.

I was first in line at a red light, it went green, took off, got pulled over and written up by LEO less than 50 yards later after the light went green. (radar ticket)

For those of you young 'uns who don't know what a /2 bmw is.. well, your Sears lawn tractor makes about the same horsepower..

For years and years I bragged to my Airhead budz that I had the fasted /2 around and could prove it!

Yes, I paid the fine.

Yes, it was worth it - even if just for bragging rights to my fellow Airhead riders...
