Motorcycle tires as nail magnets

I just got a set of Avon's and picked up my first nail within 3 days. Umounted the tire, took it down to Barney's and they did a dunk test. There was a nail embeded perfectly in the deep V groove of the rear avon tire. I thought it looked like a suspicous location. Have your punctures been in the point of the V groove?

Nope...dead middle of the center of the tire. Thank goodness, right at the thickest cross section.

Haven't pulled the screw out yet...hasn't leaked down any and I wanna get home, but maybe it's a short screw and didn't go all the way through. wishwishwishwishwishwishwish

Skoot's confoozed...we're talkin' about tire plugs...he's thinkin' hair plugs.
And to the dogpile suggestion, and with apologies to Pink Floyd...

"...all in all you're just a 'nother **** with no balls..."
Well,

ah,

yes,

I figured after 3 kids it was time for THE surgery, But how did ya know?
Maybe it was that graceful curve in your wrist...or that delightful lithp. :****:

Speaking of... Did Skooter get a girlfriend or sumpin? We just don't seem to be the love of his life like we once did.
(I have to quit typing now...it's hard to see through the tears...)
Well, as a matter of fact......................

(And she thinks I spend too much time on the computer! I can't imagine why.)

Yer one to talk, grandpa. Isn't it time for your daily bodily functions conversation?

:****:

I have a friend that has the theory the front tire stands the nail up and the rear gets it. I tell him he is full of **** but the majority of the punctures seem to be on the rear so evidence is on his side. :D

Howie - the muchroom plugs go in fine, but what tends to happen is the stretched out part snaps and you get sudden deflation. Something Skooter probably experienced, but it's not worth me searching to find that thread. ;)

Say Skooter, who cares about your love life or medical progress? What I really want to know is if you found a JOB yet? So, what 'ya doing to help humanity, (at least yours), now?

And I'm pretty sure FJRChick is right, a tire is a part. Some admin should move this thread before Slap sees it. ;)

Most plausible, unscientific theory I've heard in a while.

+1 i buy it. it makes sense... even if it doesn't "stand it up", it at least disturbs it or puts it in motion so the rear can easily be punctured.

so - I guess if you only ride on the rear tire -- you will not get nails? is this correct?

I have and carry both. If I see someone I don't know with a flat I'll let 'em use the mushroom plug. Next time my tires gets a hole I'm using the sticky string.
Again, another vote against the mushroom plug.

Why?

I don't know if its in one of Skootie's links (Too lazy to look :p ) but from what I've seen I think if its near the cords they tend to cut the mushroom head off the plug and it pops out.

Standard thought in the bicycling community. Guys that do a lot of touring will have a formed wire that'll remove any debris that sticks to the front tire so you don't ride over it and cause a flat. They'll have a rubber flap very close to the ground that's supposed to knock down and screws, nails, etc. so the rear tire either doesn't run over it, or does so with the offending object flat on the ground. Some folks swear that it works.....I don't have personal experience. Even if it does, bicycles move much slower than motorcycles and don't have movable rears.

is there any reason that it always seems to be the rear tire???
Because when the front unexpectedly goes flat it often results in a crash and rider never realizes it was a nail in the front tire that did them in.

(Sorry, just another dumb theory)

I would have no problem with using a plug for a field repair, but due to the overall thinness of motorcycle tires I would recomend an internal patch as previously mentioned if you plan to continue using the tire for any length of time.

Well this does seem to work together. The squid on one wheel stood up the nail so you got it in the fron this time. Think about it ;)

I picked up a nail last fall. Took the tire off and put a "boot" patch in it - like tube patch inside and pull thru plug to the outside. Had bike on lift today. Thought I would look the tire over where the plug exits. Looked great. SO DID the new nail not two inches from the plug. Jeez!! Like you, no leak here yet. Nail may be short.. Anyway , tire will come off this time to trash heap. Housing boom still goin on here. Will be glad to see it slow some.

Oh yeah. got two nauils in car tire last fall also, so I am not bothered by the "motorcycle only exclusive".

Do a search. Just kidding. I took mine off and plugged and patched it from the inside. They do make a plug/patch designed to be inserted from the inside. That is the only way Costco will patch a tire. My wife is a Costco internal auditor and she told me so. It must be right. I would tell you more of what I can recall from the Never Ending thingy, but I thought you would like to do a search for yourself...still just kidding. :) B)

Both cord/glue and plugs are good to get you to a tire shop. I vote for plugs and glue on a road trip. If I find a place to fix the tire on the trip great. If not I'm not stuck out in the boonies too long waiting for a ride to the tire shop. If I can't find one the plug and glue should hold until I get home. Just use what works best for your situation, but an inside patch is the best for long term repair.

There have been several reports of the steel belts shearing the plug from the shaft. I'm trying to remember which sites I saw it on, but in one case, they took off the tire only to find the mushroom part bouncing around inside. The sites may have been the ZRXOA, STN, or here. I prefer the sticky string.

When I first had a ZRX 1200, I picked up a nail in the FRONT tire at 700 miles on the bike. I totaled the bike at 1700 miles after hitting a deep, sharp-edged pothole. That pothole did in the front tire. Therefore, my front tires lasted me 700 miles and 1000 miles - not very good longevity.

I use Ride-On tire sealant. It works great! It's kinda like taking an umbrella to work. Doesn't rain.

We had a lot of snow here in Denver this year, so I bought a snow blower/thrower. I got a monster 9 h.p. (better Mojo). It

only snowed once after that. Before I bought the blower it snowed every Friday for six weeks. My wife said maybe I

shouldn't have bought the snow blower and I just told her it's working great - ain't snowing!

p.s. I think I buy into the rear tire theory, so from now on I'm just going to put to goop into the rear tire...why waste the stuff on the front tire

What snow in Denver, Bob? I don't remember any snow. :p

I knew you were getting on in years  Talk about your short term memory...

Now that I have my snow blower, there won't be any...
