Sounds like fun. If there are a lot of autos on the "Auto Road", you won't be in pitch black!

Hundreds of cars that probably got displaced from the June ride that got weather-cancelled I heard.

Beautiful star-filled night. Didn't leave South Portland until 1:30 or so. Left the side cases at home.

Got at the end of the long line (more than a hundred cars and bikes) before 3:30. After impressing the car behind me with big leg shivers in their headlights, the line started moving and I paid admission at 4:00 a.m. 8 mile ride up, road conditions that would have seriously killed my wife, had plenty of time at the top for coffee and egg sandwiches (and heat. Around 40 at the top with winds of 25 - 35)

Remember leaving the cases at home? Hunch on my part that the mountain road was "rough"....yes. Very happy I didn't subject them to popping off up into the air and down over the side. If any doubts, check out the very latest Travis Pastrana red bull video where he broke his own record. No texting while mountain driving here!!

Pictures to the bucket site this week, fingers crossed. NERDS and EOM next.

Out.

Can't wait to see the pic's. I thought about but would have had only an hours sleep. Maybe another time. Weather looked perfect for the sunrise.

A lot of that I didn't get to see because it was so cloudy when I went up. Looks like you had a lot better day than I did.

Good for you,

Dave

Last year, wifey and I were there during leaf peeping. It was cloudy and foggy that morning, but I still enjoyed the experience. The visitor's center at the top is pretty cool.

I had a ton of fun in the northeast last year.

I'd like to do that someday.
It's a tad bit less of an extreme adventure, but you can drive up to the top of Cadillac Mountain, out on Mount Desert Island (near Bar Harbor) Maine and see the sunrise just about any morning. I believe (but am not positive) that you'll be the first in the continental US to glimpse the sun that day. It's a much less harrowing ride up, paved all the way, and there is no requirement to pay a toll. The added bonus is that when you get down off the mountain you can gorge yourself on Homarus Americanus!!

<thunderous applause> Very cool, sir.

Here was my view when we went up a year ago. I'm surprised that there was enough visibility to even take this picture. Obviously you have a much nicer view than we did.
