O, Woe is me!!
My stepson, who joined the army in the summer of 2001, served in Baghdad for most of 2004, made sergeant while in Baghdad, came home and went into the "Green to Gold" program and attended the University Of Texas in El Paso as an ROTC cadet, was commisioned in December 2007, has now achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Here's some pics of the little ceremony for his rank insignia:
His wife affixing the embroidered rank badge on his ACU shirt:
His CO setting a silver bar onto his beret:
8 years now in the Army, 18 months as an officer. 26 years old, plenty of time to get a star or two, huh?
He currently serves with the Old Guard at Ft. Myer in Arlington, his particular unit responsible for medical support at public presidential functions in and around D.C. As an example, here he was on memorial day, President Obama speaking at the podium.
When he got his commission he had graduated high enough in his class to get choice of assignment. Apparently that still applies, as his time at Ft. Myer is up, and he's on his way to Hawaii on October!
