I just bought a new 2009 and I was just idling it in the garage tonight. AFter getting it upto operating temperature I thought I'd rev it a bit keeping in mind I'm still in the break in stage. So I slowly ramped it up to 4K RPM and held it there for about 5 seconds and let off on the throttle. I could feel a bunch of heat coming from the fairing so I naturally took a quick look inside. Well just as I glanced in I saw what looked like glowing headers that where cooling down?

So naturally I thought I'd try it again, but this time I watched the headers. Sure as **** after about 5 seconds I could see the header get so hot they glowed!!! I couldn't believe it. Then I thought I'd see what happened once the electric fans kicked in. So I let it idle for a minute or so and the fans kicked. I right away got the RPM up to 4K again and no glowing.

So I guess when you're driving its got enough air flow that they shouldn't glow. But holy crap man, how the hell can the exhaust be so hot??? I've never seen this on any bike I've ever owned. I know new engines are a bit tight, but why would a tight motor cause the exhaust to be so hot? I could see the block maybe running a bit warmer, but why the headers?

It almost seems like its lean as hell.

Anyone else ever seen this?

Could be why they make headers our of stainless steel...so they can be thinner gauge and live through the heat cycles.

And, yes, internal combustion exhaust gases are that hot.

Especially the Canadian versions.....

;)

Dude! That sucks! Somebody snuck you one of those detuned French bikes with 20 less horsepower. I mean, you get the slightly better mileage, but you paid for all 140+ horse.

I'd check this thread and others like it to fix this SERIOUS issue.

The search on this forum really SUCKs. How is this post "pointless"?

Didn't say it was pointless. It could be never-ending and/or recurring.

I found the thread I linked (and a bunch more) in 25 seconds using the sucky search, but that was probably me. I bet I could find it via Google too.

I'd worry more about the French engine though. ;)

BUT....Sam, not when one type is "headers glowing red".

Not even when one types in "+headers+glowing+red"

HOWEVER, "+headers<space>+glowing<space>+red" did get that result.

Not every one of us is "computer literate" and understand or regularly use systems whereby we normally or habitually know how to arrive at the correct sequence to access the information we need.

Thankfully there are those who are able to access the information we need and link us to a particular thread, or instruct us in the necessary steps (Or hoops to jump through, depending on one's point of reference).

Funny, MadMike2, but I just did the search WITHOUT the plus signs, just using the term "glowing header" and returned the same results as puppychow.

The search seems to be fine without jumping through hoops, as long as you search with terms using 4 OR MORE LETTERS!

The search just doesn't seem to work worth ***** on 3 letter search terms.

I had a Fiero that made its headers glow. It's what headers do.

Cast-iron manifolds? No, they don't glow. Stainless tubing? yes, it glows when hot.

Oh yeah...AND because the search "LIKES" you. :p

I wonder why it worked for Sam? Maybe it likes him, too.

It likely doesn't likemy operating system and it knows I'm not a techno person so it can pick on me without trepidation. :dntknw:

Try typing "headers glowing" (without the quotes) and see if you can search on that.

I'm guessing "headers glowing red" failed without adding the spaces because you had a 3 letter component in your search string (red).

I don't understand (like that's something new)!

I just typed it exactly as Sam said in his post, "headers glowing red",m and it worked.

This just supports my theory that technology programs are like dogs: They sense my fear and inadequacies and exploit them against me. It's almost as bad as being married...except the solution is less expensive.

Don't worry about it man, it's completely normal and it's why most tuners run a large industrial fan in front of the bike when they dyno-tune a bike.

I agree, the search on this forum really does suck. Your post is not pointless.

As our beloved admin, Iggy, pointed out in post #5, just a few above this one, the post wasn't necessarily pointless. However, it most certainly IS recurring, hence its placement here in NEPRT, which could mean the post is never ending OR pointless OR recurring, or any combination of the three.

NEPRT doesn't stand for never ending AND pointless AND recurring. The post only has to match NE or P or R to wind up here in the elephant graveyard.

Doesn't have to be pointless to be in this category.

Most likely it is a recurring post.

If it is never ending OR recurring OR pointless...it gets thrown in this area.
