Erm.... I pussed out myself. Events worked out such that, in the end, I just went for the partying.
Which was an EXTREMELY regretful experience by 9pm Sunday night.... pounding tequila shots while uber-fatigued from Desert riding all day is ill-advised.
To start at the beginning.... the original plan was to meet my Lisa at SLC airport when she lands from her Denver flight. Had planned to discuss riding 2-up in the 1088 event with her when we got over to the Steve Chalmers BBQ that Thursday night.
Shyeah... that discussion didn't go too far, and truthfully, she isn't really ready for this kind of riding quite yet anyway. It was a noble (but flawed) idea to try to take her on one of these rallies just now.
Soooooo.... we decided to do some touring in Nevada on Fri/Sat... with the Great Basin National Park being the goal for Saturday. On Friday, after a late start, we decided to spend the night at the Hotel Nevada in Ely, since I had to do some final discussions with our Caterers for our "Wild Wild West!" banquets in a few weeks.
So we blast outta Salt Lake City in the late morning, heading West.....
Taking a little water break somewhere in northeastern Nevada.....
Trying to keep the woman hydrated while running through the Desert....
Now it is Saturday morning, and we are burning along HWY's 6/50 towards the bar at Major's Junction:
Then it was time for more gorgeous, blazing fast riding toward Great Basin National Park...
At last.... we arrive at the destination!
Wheeler Peak is simply beyond awesome.... it is over 13,000 feet in altitude, and has a Scenic Drive that goes over 10,500 feet high... Lisa and I rode all the way to the top!
Here's a close-up of the impressive headwall above the large glacial cirque..... beyond awesome!!
Starting to head back to Salt Lake City now..... at a water break, Lisa said the bike must not be powerful enough to take both of us over 100 mph....
My response to that statement.......
So on the way back to SLC, somewhere in the western Utah desert, I had Lisa snap off this shot of the GPSIII+ so she had her "proof"....
Another awesome run with this woman.... 3 days, a bit over 2000 miles.... next up: the "Wild Wild West!", where she will be a Staff worker at a Checkpoint. THAT will be something else....
