After TAZ died in december I had thought about getting another bird to fill the silence left behind by his passing. I waited a few months just to be sure I wanted to take on having another character in my life that will leave me again in time :( just like TAZ. Well, after enough time had passed i went to a bird show just to look and see if my heart could deal w/ seeing another bird that looked like my little friend. Lo and behold not only one ,but 2 came home w/ me! They look and act differently than Taz ,but I had 15yrs w/ him, and boy did i miss those little voices, along w/ the occasional aerial visit. Hopefully the picture shows up,me and the wife call them my retirement birds, cuz if they live as long as TAZ (possibly longer w/ all the new stuff they got for these guys) it'll be time for me to r

With my pets I have learned to be able to pretty much tell when their time is near. One did fool us about eight years ago. Our Stud Husky Salsa had cancerous legions on his heart. He died peacefully as his heart stopped at idle. I know the pain. Hope they have a long stay. TJ

Ohhhhhhh, aren't they adorable! There's nothing like the company of birds. People think that they don't have personalities... but they do... big time!

Did you name them?

I've had birds since I was in my early 20's. I presently have two. A cockatiel named Jeepers & a cockatoo named Dakota. I need to see if I can scare up a couple of photos of my lovelies. They don't mingle. Dakota had been known to get spooked by the smaller birds flying around her & has done some damage to the flying offender. She's just the sweetest big & white girl, though. What a suck up she is.

And Jeepers... he's my bud! He has so much personality! He hangs out on my shoulder all over the house & sings in my ear... or he flies to a comfortable place to watch me on the computer. If I have bread/toast or pasta he's up my *** trying to get in my plate for treats.

He came to me a little later in his life but I hope to have him for quite a few more years. I get so much enjoyment out of the man of the house.

Now, Dakota... she's about 15 right now & Jeepers is probably about 11. She was my mom's bird & now I have her although my mom is still here. Turns out that Dakota is EXTREMELY LOUD.

Her life expectancy is about 80. I expect to hand her down to someone when I die. She'll suck up to that person, too... no doubt.

Anyway, good luck w/ your new friends. They are bound to give you years of enjoyment.

Heidi

I wonder if the big white one tastes like chicken or turkey? Do you think 20 minutes/pound works for cooking these things as well?

:tease:

I am assuming that you guys are just making funnies but I really don't find either of your humor funny in the slightest amount. Those are my pets. Do you have pets? How would it feel to you if someone was joking about killing & eating them?

This forum can be so fun... & then on the other hand people think they can be jerks since there sitting at a keyboard. Grow the hell up.

From a purely biological standpoint, does anyone else find it facinating that they can live that long? I know they do, it's just really amazing to me.

Good save wood. My moms birds lived pretty long, too....she had a way of keeping the cat away from the birds as they didn't really see "eye to eye".

My parents have a collared dove. It landed on my brother's head at Thanksgiving when he was outside in my grandma's backyard. He was able bring it in the house as it had clearly been somebody's pet. We took it home while Grandma tried to find the owner in her little town. By Christmas there were no takers so we kept her. That was 1993!! Mom and Dad had no idea the commitment they were in for. Birdie is still going strong, cooes every morning like an alarm clock, laughs when she lands and is a wonderful pet. She was almost cat food at new year's though. Birdie was walking around on the floor in my living room and my dad wasn't paying enough attention. Reeses came outta no where and pinned her down. Luckily she got away! That prolly took a few years off the rest of her life though!

I started with a pair of cockatiels when I was about 10 years old. I started with a grey female, then added an albino mail about a year later. Neither were tame when I got them, but that didn't last long. I used to whistle when I came in the door and they would both fly and land on my shoulders, or head, whichever their questionable aim left them with. I sure loved those birds. The only time I was bitten was when I fell asleep with them on my pillow. In the middle of the night I apparently rolled over the male that had gone under the covers and I must have scared the crap out of him cause he bit my leg. When I turned on the light his eyes were huge and he flew to my shoulder for safety as he thought the evil bed monster must still be around!

Yes, when I was a kid, I slept with my birds. Not in the way many dirty minded people may soon suggest

Sorry Luv...I grew up in rural America..."going to get chicken" meant going to Christensen's to get 24 live white ones and doing the dirty work ourselves. Yep, they tasted just like store bought chicken. Hamburger was the big black and white one out in the field. I liked them with a warm red juicy center. Pets were animals where I grew up. Some good ones helped on the farm and we always shot an extra pheasant for Shags for all of his good work in the field when we took him hunting.

Never thought of them as family members. But I guess some do...all in your perspective... :D

On a rare occasion it hits me but I'm no TWN. B)

Actually I wondered if anyone would pick up on it.

Critters be cool. Don't get too upset with MNFJR05, farm boys have a whole different, um, relationship with animals. Especially with the big ones they can mount. On the wall. I said ON THE WALL!! :D
