interesting, rdfranz. What are the maintenence intervals on that beemer? I had an RT(once) and valve adustments were every 4000 mi, if I remember correctly. Not a cheap experience either. Maybe my RT was a lemmon, but I'd freguently need a part while on a long trip and they'd say,"we'll have it next week".That sucks. I had none of these problems with Honda & my ST1100s.As I recently began looking for a new bike, BMW was not even a consideration. I ordered an 06' FJR.
Facts like maintenance schedules haven't been released yet, but that should be very similar to the new K1200 R and S models. The deals that give me pause are getting the plastic off to screw with it; The need to deal with computerized systems that control things like suspension, brakes fer' chrissake, and even delivery of power to the frigging tail light; The Mandatory nature of the servicing - and at a dealer - because hook-up to the dealer's diagnositic unit is required, and then that is in turn connected to THE BIG MF COMPUTER AT BMW CENTRAL.

How service gets handled, all this data acquisition, is alwo irksome to me. One owner was told that he had revved the engine too high, and run it for too long at high rpm during it's initial 600 miles.

Hello, Big Brother. Hello, Big ARROGANT Brother.

Is that kind of treatment rampant? No. But, there are hundreds of other Idiocies possible, far enough in number that they've proven to me to be inescapable. I don't need to take crap about my ownership of my motorcycle from The Company. And, I've never had to with the four Japanese companies I've patronized. That's PATRONIZED, as in SUPPORTED, and then being regarded as such, and then treated appropriately to that relationship.

In this world, not only do, "You get what you pay for", also, "You pay for what you get." And BMW gives you a lot. Including The Business.

Best wishes.

rdfrantz, The too high rev thing BMW told it's customer sounds familiar. When new, the rear brake peddle on my RT went vertical (went down way to far). My dealer couldn't or wouldn't fix it,claiming there was something wrong with my (German ancestry) anatomy. I found another dealer with a competent mechanic, which is hard to do in itself. My BMW experience left me in awe and wonder concerning the source and durability of the BMW "mystic". Eventually that experience gave me a new appreciation for the B-17. Never again. This FJR will be my first Yamaha but latest of a long line of Jap bikes. In the Jap fold I will stay.

I'd be calling "********" on the so-called tech that told me this, since any engine management system worth its salt will shut down the ignition or fuel delivery LONG before the engine reaches rpms considered "too high" for the engine by the designers.

I've never seen an engine that didn't have a redline that was conservatively 500 to 1000 revs BELOW the actual safe design limit

Okay I got a few pics this morning:

I talked with a guy from Cypress, He said the linked brakes... you have to be pushing a bit on the rear (He thought it was 40% or so) before the front comes on, if so it should work okay in low traction situations which was my concern.

I asked him about the wimpy alternator... he took my number and said he would ask around to see if Yamaha had anything in the works for the future and call me next week.

A couple of interesting bikes I saw outside...

Nice Gold Wing:

If you like trikes this might have enough power:

I'm not holding my breath but at least I got more than a blank look.

Thanks TWN. Did you notice the moveable rear fairing and how it functions? Seems like it flips open to release heat on you if you need it, as in winter riding.

One thing we need is to be seen on our bikes. What is Yamaha doing going to one headlight on dip. Is this a DOT insanity? This is crazy. One reason I heard is that it makes cagers think it is a car. Well whoop de doo ain't that what is needed? The bigger they think we are the better off we are as I see it.

Looks like there is an easy mounting point for sliders though.

Regarding BMW "you vill do it my way attitude"

Short story - beware BMW power brakes. My buddy was backing his K1200RS out of his garage. Steep ramp, bike rolling backwards. Hell it is really moving. I think - he knows what he is doing. Keeps accelerating, geez what the heck. Bike hits kerb behind it, rear up in air, bike down. He is OK bike dinged.

What happened?

Don't know pulling brake lever until it nearly broke.

Ah **** forgot to turn on ignition! No electric power no brakes.

Ain't that just dandy. Wonder what happens if you get a short doing 70 approaching a 30 mph hairpin?

Triplet.. your seeing the flash from Rogues camera. There's no way possible for the bike to be allowed to run inside the show !

Sounds good to me will leave the right hand for throttle use except in extreme emergencie. All finger thumbs and wrists will get even more of a break on the AE!!!

At first that's all I could think of to account for it - maybe it's the flash. Sometimes they wire the bike to lite the thing up but doesn't seem that way. So many bikes are coming out with only one light on dip. BMW does that on a few of their bikes. Guess that it's because they use that tiny high output bright.

Heh, heh, heh... The Moto Guzzi rep handed me the key to the new Griso. Fired right up and sounded great! Comfy bike, but still to funky for my tastes... ;)

There are vents, but you need a screw driver to adjust them.

TWN;

I'm assuming this could be rectified by swapping out the screws with thumb screws no?

Dunno. Maybe. There is a center hole that the screw goes into flanked by two smaller holes. Try as I might, I couldn't pull the vent away far enough to see what makes it, um, er, tick. We're gonna hafta wait and see...

Most excellent write up by all those in this thread. Special thanks to TWN for his writeup & Yambone, Rogue, & Repairman for the photos. Those of us in other parts of the country appreciate the effort & info. Ron
