NAFO to Montrose, Co

When this trip started, I thought it would be cool to see if I could find my Grandma's old house in Grand Junction, CO. Of course I had no address, but certainly I could find it, hell, it's only been 35 years, and it's kind of on the way!

Then again, I wanted to run as much of GZ's SS1k route as possible too. Hmm, need to be back at work Monday, another 1k miles out of the way is going hurt; but screw it, when I'm old(er) and gray(er) I won't remember the pain but will remember the ride and fotos, so off I go.

And for those of you who ran the SS1k route and would like dvd copy, please PM me.

Oh ****, pulled over. The officer was really nice; said I blew through a no left-hand turn, which in fact I did. Explained I must be tired, to miss a sign like that, and were there rooms in Leadville? That honest and open admission turned the entire conversation around. No paper hung, shook the man's hand will be sending a Thank You note to his Sargent.

-more later, got to sleep now.

Don, that bar "Lefty's" is actually a breakfast/lunch place for the most part and caters to those that work around the Capitol Mall. My office (until this past weekend's transfer) was about two blocks away and I'd eat there about twice a month. Small world...

I'm pretty studly, but I think that stud was actually 650Cent, who's even more studlier. I know, who woulda thunk it possible?

D. C. I remember the slumgullion pass I went over it on the way home back to cali. It is an awesome road. I also snapped the sign and about two turns down the road there were two forest rats on the road got slowed down and they took off down the mountain.

It is a great road :)

Once again, great pics, DC.

I have two uncles that have lived in Leadville for about 30 years. I've never been to see them. What the hell have I been thinking?

Hey DC, thanks for great reports & pics! Feel so bad that I didn't get to go but did get to go through you guys. Guess I should not be whining because I'm just going out the door to spend a week wondering through WA, ID and MT but .....

You and Craz8 take care.

D..... you ride too damn much!!! I can't take it all in.... stop it!!....... :p :D  now I am

Torrey Utah to Home

Yesterday afternoon I saw a FJR pilot taking fotos of his scooter with the Colorado river in the background. I stopped, met a stranger from NAFO, some guy named Heuretic . He turned out to be a real nice guy and we rode on into Capitol Reef state park where he was looking to camp.

We took several photos, and I continued on to Torrey, another 10 or so miles up the road for a hotel. I checked in, then headed back out to beautiful downtown Torrey for a Subway sandwich and beer; and who do I find in the parking lot but Hueretic!

Heuretic explained the campground had no shower, and injury to insult, the camp lawn had just been watered. I suggested the 'Affordable Inn' as it was the cheapest and newest in town. We talked a bit, then I headed to the room for a good Jacuzzi soak and a good night sleep for the hot ride awaiting me in the morning. My early departure meant, most likely, I wouldn't see Heuretic so we said good by that night.

So, bright and early the next morning I promptly went the wrong freakin' direction, all the time the GPS saying 'Make a U turn, Make a U-turn in .3 miles, When possible, make a U turn'. Well, I didn't believe it until I was 25 miles down the road and finally broke out a paper map. Sure enough I had road past hiway 12 on the way to the hotel…

Made U-turn, and 25 miles later saw Heuretic packing his bike. I was too embarrassed to stop, so I snapped this foto instead, and kept on riding.

My goal was to ride the infamous 'Hells Backbone', a road built literally on a ridgeback. On the way to the backbone:
