ya can't leave us hangin.... so who wins?
Well the first person to leave his name was valetz, so I am thinking he wins the prize. I enjoyed finding the answer, nice post Jim! I am a mathematician by trade, but an amateur mathematical historian. We should talk about Zeno sometime :)

And can I ask - Valetz, how in the hell would you know that? Is he a fellow Norwegian?

If you check Mr. Burleigh's profile you'll find

"Man cannot be alone with himself, for in his solitude he begins to contemplate the miseries of life. When man becomes aware of them he turns to distractions." Pascal, The Pensées
Me, I just ride my motorcycle...

BA Philosophy, Berkeley
I made the assumption it was a philosopher and then headed to Google.

I officially name Valetz the winner of the Name that Avatar! contest. Congratulations and well done. :clapping: PM me with your mailing address, and your prize will wing its way to you toot sweet.

BTW, what did you Google? I wasn't aware that Pascal and Kierkegaard were linked. Or did you do an image search for "philosopher" and scroll through the images?

Kierkegaard is the philosopher I studied in depth while in school (and what a colossal waste of time THAT was! ) . Anyway, as for philosophy...that was in another country. And besides, all the philosophers are dead.*

*For Pedantry Bonus Points and bragging rights at the next English Major Convention :graduated: , identify the author and actual quotation alluded to in this statement. Actually, if you REALLY want to be pedantic, name the original author and quote AS WELL AS the famous author who later parodied it in his first novel. Any English majors out there...? Me, I married one.

Is he a fellow Norwegian?
I'm Norwegian. Kierkegaard was Danish. Jb
