I was on the way home yesterday and was coming to a stop for a right turn on to the main north-south highway going through Napa. As I approached the stop I heard sliding-scraping noises. I looked left and an R6 had gone down while making a right hand turn and was sliding across the pavement headed for my car. The bike just missed my left rear quarter panel and continued sliding until it hit the curb to my right. The R6 rider was tumbling across the pavement on his own.

I stopped to assist as the rider gathered himself and his bike up. He was "rashed" up a bit, but not too bad. He was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. A helmet is required in California. He stated that he had just put the tires on the bike. I asked him if they were "take-offs", and he said yes. For those that are unfamiliar with the term, take offs are what a racer discards (or sells) after they have had some wear or too many heat cycles. Trust me, these tires were completely trashed before he put them on. I suggested to him that take-offs were not the way to go. You think he will heed my advice?

Nope.

If he's riding around wearing no gear and buying take off's, he's not going to buy new tires. As it is he probably bought the take-off's because then it'll look like he's ridden his bike hard.

He certainly has now. And the body work will look it as well ! After this experience, he may just see a grain of truth in your advice B E...

In a word, no. Those type of guys never really seem to learn their lessons. He'll probably be back on the bike again, without any safety gear too.
