So I'm in my work truck the other day crossing the bridge over our bay, and I get passed by a squid on a GSX of some kind. I don't know which, but the fairing said SUZUKI. Shorts, t-shirt, no helmet, but damn, he had sneakers instead of sandals! Anyway, he'd replaced the taillights with little swirly LED things, which I was looking at and wondering why anyone would do such a stupid thing. They made little spirals and circles and stuff, I guess theoretically to enhance visibility.

Only thing is, he or the mfr forgot brake lights. Traffic has a tendency to back up on the east side of the bridge for the east-bound lanes (2 lights and a RR x-ing in the first 1/4 mile will do that) and while climbing the bridge, our lanes were clear. As we crested, we saw a parking lot. He saw it first, and grabbed a good fistful of brake. The only reason I knew this is that his eyes were focused on the mirrors.

In my mind I'm thinking "Hmm. I look in the mirrors when I'm braking my bike, to be sure that nobody . . . Oh, ****!!!" and apply brakes on the truck.

His cute little swirly deals did NOTHING when he applied the brakes. No change in flashy stuff, no intensity increase, nothing. I couldn't get up next to him in traffic, but I really wanted to, so's I could 'splain to him that no brakes lights is just plain dumb.

So is a rider running down a bike while driving . . . . . I managed not to, but not by much.

I would guess that he probably didn't have his fancy swirlies wired correctly. However, I am not a big fan of replacing back lights with LEDs. They are fine for additional lighting, but they seem to only be bright if you are directly behind looking straight at them. They don't seem to spread the light nearly as well as conventional tail and brake lights. I don't know if the swirly things are better or worse than normal LEDs.

From high school, I learned a swirly is not a good thing to be on the receiving end of....
