My wife is interested in "the old ways" surviving from the land so to speak. I would like to get her a book or few on how to identify edible plants and/or homeopathic remidies growing in the wild and other such related topics. I know I can Google and have 10 million books thrown at me. BTDT and the damn thing that was supposed to be for N America, was 90% G Britan.

Looking for something from someone with firsthand knowledge. With a prefered focus on the S.E. U.S.

FjrFencer,

I have had the 2 pocket card packs for many years. One is for Edible Plants while the other one is for Primitive Medical aid. Handy, practical, and portable.

Years ago we had several of the Foxfire books.

Foxfire

I don't see them in the book case anymore but they were fun and full of down to earth wisdom. Now I wonder where they got too. I see in the link above they are still around and being published.

This guy can find you water and food anywhere.

Ray Mears

Suggest you get hold of a couple of his DVD's fascinating stuff, from lighting a fire with nothing but a knife in a soaking wet rain forest to, finding food and shelter in the arctic. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge and his shows are made in different situations around the world, even if he doesnt cover your exact region I am sure you would learn plenty.

I took a survaval class about a year ago and the instructor told us to use Amazon.com and find books from the deparment of defense. He suggested buying the CD collections for $15 - $30 to get many books on a CD.
