Need commuter train info for day trip into NYC from New Jersey

During my soon to depart, 50/60/70 ride, I will need to find a place to stay about an hours train ride west of NYC and then take an early commuter train in the city for a long day of sight seeing and eating great food. I have no desire to ride in the congestion paying tolls, looking for parking etc. Any ideas about a good location to stay and commute, with maybe a link to the train info site would be most helpful. Date will be approx. Sept 25th.

take a look at Jersey City, just a sub stop from NYC. Hotels much cheaper there.
