New 650R has no centerstand. WTF?

After I got the 650R home I discovered it has no centerstand. I guess I understand that weight and cost would be negatively affected. I've been wanting to make a simple lift arrangement anyway for FJR related service. This new discovery pressed me into gear.

I had a 'boat winch' hanging around the garage from some other abandoned project so I decided to put it to good use.

Winch is rated for 1400 lbs. I wouldn't want to put anything close to that amount on the 2" webbing strap however.

This arrangement lifts the little Ninja very easily. I'm sure it will easily lift either end of the FJR to help with tire replacements, etc.

Changing the oil on this bike is now a breeze. I can hoist the bike a foot off the ground in a few seconds.

Interesting choice. Why not just buy a bike stand, one that holds the rear axle parallel to the ground though? They're designed to be used like that.

AFAIK most of the newer sport bikes don't come with centre stands, optional or standard. At least where I live they don't.

Absotively! Its not about the weight, but more to have less "hanging down stuff" that could touch down and thus be very upsetting x3 (physically, mentally and financially).

I also wanted to be able to get it higher off the ground than a regular stand could. This way I can get both axles off the ground. That and I had the winch and half the lumber already.

Tell me about it. I have one of the few 250's that still comes with a center stand in Australia, and I love it. Oiling a chain has never been so easy... or changing the chain... or removing/inspecting the back wheel... or filling the fuel tank right to the top when doing a long trip...

... but the suspension on anything less than the hardest setting while going around a tight left hander scrapes the center stand, so I can understand why they did it.

I completely understand why you'd want to do that, but I'm not sure I would trust something suspended from the ceiling enough to slide under it though - I'm more of a winch it up and chock it with blocks so it won't move kinda guy. If for some ungodly Murphy's law reason it was to fall, I imagine the damage to the bike would be substantial too. That's just me though - my grandpa would do something like what you've done and it'd be better than anything I could do.
