There are things that can be done in a lab where you have months or years to produce one working example. It's another thing to build 100s per hour. The science and chemistry seem OK, but the manufacturability and reliability will take a breakthrough. In the energy densities they are talking about I don't see this as a vehicle battery.

 
I'd just be happy if they could make the Li batteries trustworthy in all kinds of temperatures. We don't need new technologies for the bike batteries. We need better MFR processes...

 
Another thought: new technology, especially for motor vehicle applications, must be able to survive in a harsh environment. Vibration, potholes, fall-overs, temperature extremes, and price all add up to some difficult hurdles to overcome. A new technology must be able to do all that existing technology can do in this environment... and all for a reasonable price. And I didn't even mention how long a battery must survive.
