New or used?

I'm looking at two used 05s and perhaps trying to find a new 06 (like the color better compared to a new 07.

Can someone describe the differences from 05 to 06, and 06 to 07?

I ride in the Colorado mountains and frankly most of the year heat is a good thing.

About the heat issue - at what point did Yamaha change the fairing to provide more venting and is this adjustable?

Gen II started with the 06.

Yes, heat management was a major design change between Gens. One can adjust side vents on the Gen II bikes though to change the level of heat experienced to an extent.

Heat levels have also proved fairly subjective from one person to another and may be different on different bikes. One person's sizzling fajita plate between the legs is another person's warm friendly security blanket.

GenII started with the 2006 model.

Heat is supposed to be improved, although the heat, "problem" is somewhat subjective and varies depending on your tolerance.

Most people are still not happy with the airflow, and turbulence from the windsheild, most upgrade the windsheild on GENII's as well.

GenII's tend to have stiffer throttle, but that is an easy fix.

GenII's supposed to have a better suspension, but that can be fixed too if you do an aftermarket shock.

Gen II's have different mirrors, frotn end, and lower cowlings, side bags are also in farther (they don't jut out as much).

Gen II's have lower pegs.

Gen II's a little heavier.

It's up to you, save the cash and get an 04-05 in my opinion.

A couple of things I can remember:

Gen II

Longer swing arm

Bigger alternator by about a 100 watts

Rear bags set in to make it narrower

Different clutch slave cylinder, (making it a little harder to pull)

ABS is standard

Better heat management

Curved radiator

14 more horsepower

Radiator guard stock

Adjustable Heat deflector wings on the sides. (But nobody knows how they work)

Different tail sub frame, less suseptable to cracks.

Lower and more forward passenger pegs

Adjustable front seat height

Different intermediate gear ratio (lowers rpm by 500)

That's all I can remember right now.

I do now after my run. With the Fairings extended OUT the heat from the motor is diverted OFF of the lower legs/Calves. This is only noticable by me when it is Friggen hot outside (like 95+deg) Otherwise, it does not provide heat when the engine is happy and not trying to dissapate excess in cold climate.... I know because I had mine in the wrong position part of my ride and roasted my legs before I changed them

The Gen II is faster. And much cooler to look at,,,,, and ummmm (did I say faster) ,.. Oh and newer too

The GEN I has more room under the seat.

THe GEN II has 4 front brake pistons verses 2 on the GEN I Combined with the ABS can stop pretty fast :blink:

They are both GREAT Bikes.. (Did I saythe II is faster? )

CabonMonoxideDan, I rejected the genI every time I looked at it, but bought the genII as soon as it came out. YMMV.

Speedometer on the Gen II's is not as accurate -- indicated speed is higher than actual by quite a bit. This must be the reason for some stating that the Gen II's new gearing lowers the engine speed by 500 rpm.

The Gen II's gearing reduces the engine rpm by only 2.78 % for a given road speed.

Example:

Road speed at 4000 rpm on Gen I bikes = Road speed at 3889 rpm on Gen II bikes

A reduction of 111 rpm for the Gen II bike.

I own an 05 and an 07. The improvements to the 07 are subtle, but noticeable. I think it's a better bike.

That could be, I thought I remembered it as being more. But that's coming from someone that can't remember what he had for breakfast. LOL

Hey, I just remembered, (yeah right) Linked Braking. That is new. Now, I know what you are thinking. "I don't want no stinking linked brakes." That's what I said too, but had to change my mind. They are fantastic. Don't want to be with them anymore.
