New to the FJR so for my first ride I'm planning a little 3000 mile jaunt.

Mid life crisis kicking in. I just sold my old Vulcan Classic and bought an 06' FJR in San Diego, Ca. I live in NC. Gonna fly out in mid June and ride it home, riding thru Santa Fe and Houston to visit some old friends along the way.

I'm having a ball ordering all the necessary odds and ends needed for this trip. My credit card is smoking!

So far I've purchased:

New riding jacket and boots. (old style heavy cruiser boots won't cut it on the FJR)

Tail bag.

Yet to order:

throttlemeister cruise control

frame sliders

bag reflectors

handlebar risers

Tankbag

Also thinking about if I need a fork brace or not. Undecided on this.

Should be a fun trip! I can't wait!!

oh...and how do I change my bike classification on my profile?

Go to MY CONTROLS, left column-PERSONAL PROFILE, EDIT SIGNATURE, then just edit the info as you would in an e-mail.

By the way, way to jump in...a cross country trip will teach you everything you need to know about riding the FJR. Sounds like a great way to remedy a midlife crisis. I'm going to do it in a similar way by riding to WFO 06, about 2500 miles each way.

Welcome,

Charlie

Welcome, and ride careful...

(If the seat is stock, might want to consider an air-hawk ;) Size medium is just right ;)

Other than that have a great time :D

Thanks Charlie! Actually this will be my second mid life crisis...I had my first about 9 years ago when I bought a Shelby Cobra 427 S/C replica. I sold it a few years later but it sure scratched an itch for me!!

Welcome to the FJR1300 club you will really enjoy your ride from San Diego to NC. :yahoo:

Which dealership did you purchase it from out here?

Nothing wrong with MLC. Bought the C6 'vette in my avatar about a year ago, got married, (for the FIRST time), to a gal 12 years my junior about 18 months ago, sold my Honda VTX and bought a new FJR last week. MLC? Nah, just realizing my retirement fund is fully stocked, and it's time to have fun... :yahoo:

Have a great ride back home, and swing on by, if you are coming through Austin!

I'm buying it at Cycle Gallery in Ocean Side. One thing I have to check on today is to make sure the title is not a rebuilt. The dealer said that the speedometer had been replaced. I didn't think anything about it until I woke up this morning. He said that he has all the correct paperwork, etc. The bike has about 6500 miles on it but the speedo shows 1000.
The dealer told me that he got the bike thru a BMW dealer. Apparently the PO traded it in. I want to make sure the bike isn't a rebuilt. The price seemed a little low.....$10,3000. It should have raised a red flag at the time but I didn't really think about it until later. Hopefully all is correct and that the speedo was simply faulty.

The early '06 models had a problem with the instant gas mileage display always reading 17mpg. The only fix was to have a dealer replace the whole instrument panel which includes the odometer. If this is part of the Yamaha factory campaign to fix the instant gas mileage problem there should be an odometer mileage sticker on the inside of the glove box and a second sticker in the owner’s manual stating the actual miles at the time of the instrument panel replacement.

Clicky here for the cover sheet of the bulletin.

Hey,

Good luck on the trip and welcome to the group.

I'm in Raleigh as well, and there are a few more owners in the area.

Send me a pm and I'll give you my contact info.

Regards,

JW (Jim)

Thanks Jim....PM sent!

I have an '06 and have never thought I needed a fork brace. I know they make them but these forks are very heavy duty and this thing goes solid as a rock through the twistys. Plus to install, you have to remove the complete front end for the good models. Just my opinion.

Thanks! I appreciate all advice and suggestions.

Welcome & best of luck on the ride. You gonna do slab (70/80) or secondary roads or a mixture ? Just curious.

By the time you get home, you should know if you like the seat (LOL). You could always find an AirHawk on the way I guess. Watch out for critters if you ride at night !
