A great ride but it is starting to worry me - the past few days have been in the 70's and I've noticed the dreaded heat - fan kicks on at stoplights - goes up to 4 bars - I found keeping the shield down in stop and go stuff helps somewhat but I can feel it on my left ankle and the tank does get warm - putting the shield up in stop and go creates a hot draft right in front of me. Wondering if I may the ride choice? Maybe the FZ1 would have fit my needs better. I love this thing out on the road when it's moving but as a comuter bike I'm afraid when it gets really hot here in the summer what it will be like. I've looked at the fixes here - I hate the Baker Wing look - one of the reasons I didn't keep my Valk and put them - any suggestions appreciated. Or offers?

Buy an 07

if you think its hot in 70 degree weather wait till it gets over 90.

Frisco., unfortunately you have discovered one of the basic traits of the platform (that some have denied even exists, for numerous reasons). It is conceivable you will get used to it over time as the ambient temps. rise. If not, check out the `06-`07s. Gr8eye is right. Heat is a non issue on the redesign. :clapping:

There is plenty of information on this subject here. Use the search feature. I have an '03 and although the problem was never much of an issue for me I did the Cromeit heat mod on mine. Click here for more information.

You will find riding with the windshield down and with more gas in the tank is helpful. I noticed mine was worse when the humidity was high.

I'm planning on seeing how hot it really gets this summer then doing these mods if I can't handle the heat.

Also, look at smitty's tank blanket insulation.

All these mods only add up to about 55 bucks and a few hours of time. Should greatly reduce heat.

Oh yeah, and use your search key next time!!!! :p

I disagree. I rode an '06 and did fing the tank cooler, but instead of a moderate amount of heat diffused along the legs on my '05....I found a localized blast furnace down by my calves on the '06...particularly on the left side.

All the years generate the same amount of heat. They didn't reduce the amount of heat generated--it's still a 1298cc engine running a stoichometric mixture. What changed was the way they try and manage the heat.

I've found that gear does make a difference. In blue jeans I can feel heat on my left leg - in textle trou I can't. T be honest I've never been bothered by heat on my legs. I used Smitty's blanket under the tank and it works great to mitigate the tank heat. It really does feel good when you've run the tank low - and then fill it with all that cool gas! Ahhhh....on the other hand, that doesn't feel so great when it's 25 degrees out.

My Air Mesh Kevlar pants were the single biggest leg heat mitigator I've found, other than the Smitty tank blanket. They also protect your skin in case of a get-off.

What kind of gear are you wearing? I really don't notice it with proper gear.
+1 with the mesh pants and Proper Boots went a long way to reducing the heat

Let's start with the gear - Olympia Air Glide pants one time and jeans another - both times with RevIt boots - noticable in both situations. Olympia Air Glide jacket - once with the liner and once without - noticable both times. I realize I'm sitting on an inline 4 and it's a motor - it puts off heat but I purposely didn't buy one in 04 because of the heat and got a Warrior instead because I had a Valk several years prior and didn't like the heat on that thing. Turns out the Warrior didn't fit the type of riding I like to do and I was able to work a trade from this forum (which I have followed for several years) for the 05 Feejer. Don't get me wrong - I love the performance on this thing - it fits exactly what I was looking for - on the open road there aren't any heat issues IMO (whereas the Valk ALWAYS put off warmth) but around town this is much worse. I'm concerned because the summers here tend to get warm and I had planned on using this for commuting (stop and go unfortuantely) in addition to trips and I'm worried about when the days get up into the 90's and above. I've looked at the fixes and am hoping they will take care of the problem - if not the worse case is that I sell it and get something else - I just have to decide how much work I want to undertake. I may just have to rely on my Roadie as my commuter or sell that and get the FZ1 or somesuch other for short around town jaunts.

I must ask the obvious... if you've been reading this forum for so long, didn't you know there was excessive heat from this engine before you traded your old bike for an FJR? The pre-06's are definitely plagued w/ a heat issue. I haven't ridden an '06 or '07 yet so I cannot comment on those. I've avoided doing any kind of heat modification to mine ('04) because frankly, the heat is "supposed" to escape somewhere & attempting to keep it in the engine bay anymore than it has to be there just doesn't seem to be a good idea to me.

The biggest advice I can offer on this subject is... keep the tank at least 1/2 full w/ gas when riding in high temps & ride sparingly above 90 degrees. IMO, it becomes unbearable much above 90... even when you're moving. As sad as it sounds, I'd rather be in my car w/ the A/C. The engine that usually runs at two bars when you're moving goes to 3 bars exclusively when it's over 90. Of course, I'm one of those individuals that would rather ride in the winter then the the summer. I'm very heat intolerant.

Good Gear does help, though... big time actually... but there is just not that much relief in the world when the bike is running on 3 bars & the ambient temp is 95+ degrees.

Also, something that I have noticed... about 2 months ago, the dealer turned my idle up to anywhere between 1200 & 1400 rpm's. (I am aware that it is supposed to be at 1200) Besides the fact that my bike doesn't engine brake as well anymore, the cooling fan kicks on a LOT quicker & more often than it used to. I see me turning the idle down a bit over the summer months when I don't need as much output, at a standstill, from the alternator. That Gerbings liner... kicks *** but draws quite a bit of current.

WTF, Iggy? You know this is Alabama and we can't pronounce that word. Dumb it down, okay?
Sorry, the most efficient mixture of gasoline and air. It has the additional quality of generating more heat than rich burning mixtures.

The same gear when I'm riding my '05. A set of Oxtar Boots and Joe Rocket pants. I don't notice it so much either......I just noticed it more when I rode an '06 and brought it up again.

Gear doesn't reduce the heat generated one bit....it mitigates the effect of the heat...which is absolutely important but a different reason all together. It may seem a subtle point, but usually gets missed in these Pablum exercises.

Sadly I did know about the heat but really thought it had been exagerated - I had several people tell me it wasn't that bad so I figured I would try the heat mods and see how it did. After riding though I am more concerned that even doing those mods isn't going to make a significant difference. At least they aren't expensive mods - I will have to check into the idle though as it does seem a bit higher than it needs to be.

Some people are affected by the heat put out by the pre '06 bikes, some people notice it but shrug, some people say 'what heat ?". I guess I'm in the shrug camp with my '05, because, while I notice the heat, it doesn't seem to bother me much (except when it's 95+ & I'm going through lots of stoplights). Maybe there is a difference between bikes, a difference in tolerances for panel assembly and air vents & such... I always ride with the Oxtar boots on, so that is probably a big part of it. Also in summer I ride with the Yammie shield down (use a BIG shield in winter for obvious reasons). Oh, also, I put some Gripster on the tank sides for better knee grip & found out it also insulated my knees from the tank warmth.

Good luck with the heat fixes, many people have done them & pronounced success !

Frisco,

I have an '03 in Hotlanta metro and the heat does not bother me unless I am in stop-n-go traffic when the temps are above 95 with matching humidity. Even when I rode in 104 degree weather with <50% humidity, with Phoenix 4 JoeRocket jacket and Draggin jeans, it was no bother than anyone else in a car without AC.

Good luck with your perspective.
