2007 FJR. Went out to ride to work yesterday and I thought the battery was dead. Put the charger on it and drove the truck to work. Well today there is still zero lightsm start ect. Before I start digging. Im hoping its just a blown main fuse. Any common pro lems causing this?

Yes, the Gen II ignition switch which has a factory recall. Call any Yamaha service department and give them your VIN, they will look up your bike and see if the recall has been done. It'll take just a few seconds to verify the #1 suspect.

You may be able to fiddle with the ignition switch and get things to turn on but you shouldn't expect that to be dependable, just another diagnostic step.

I was told it was already done by the previous owner
Perhaps it was done but not using the upgraded switch from the recall. The recall switch has a yellow band around the wire at one of the connectors to indicate it is the new and upgraded switch. If the main fuse is good and the battery cables are tight about the only thing left is the ignition switch.

Do you own a multimeter?

CRAP! Dealership is the only game in town for a battery. $120
$120 (locally) for a good Maintenance Free (like Yuasa) gas absorbed mat battery, on first thought was not so terrible a price,

well, I guess it does hurt...I paid Amazon for a Motobatt total $94, so $120+tax is agreeably a kick in the balz...

sorry

And shes running again. That battery took a total crap with no advance warning, kinda odd it never even cranked slow one time.

Don't feel bad. I (accidentally

) let my VStrom battery discharge and freeze one winter, amazed that it didn't split and took a charge in the spring. Week later I was buying a new one!

Now I bring the FJR one indoors on a tender.

$120 seems reasonable for a decent battery?

Glad you fixed it.

Al.

Batteries Plus no longer carries the Yuasa line, they now have a brand called Extreme?

Who knows who it's made by, I got one a couple weeks ago.

Happens all too often.

My previous '06 blinked the instruments once at a fuel-up hot start. At least I got a warning before it completely crapped out.

Glad she's running again!

The SDS (sudden death syndrome) was why a lot of Wingsters switched from Yuasa. It's usually a short between plates in a lead acid battery. Better to swap early than end up stranded on the road. I started swapping every 2.5 years after being bit once on 2 different styles of Wings. Seems a good early swap on the FJR would be about 3 to 3.5 years.

I find I'm less tollerant of ride interruptions the older I get.

I'd rather swap 1000 miles early than end up on cords, nursing a tread set home, or trying to arrange a tire install on the road where pricing isn't negotiable.

With batteries, I'd rather swap it in my garage with my tools than on the road in BFE.
