The riding here is ok - better at times, but right now - pretty miserable except at dawn and a few hours thereafter. The roads are "curvy", not twisty. Their condition varies, but overall, I'd say average at best. We do not use our fuel tax very wisely, IMHO. The better roads will parrallel water - usually a bayou. There are some decent rides in the southern part of the State, but the best riding roads in the best condition now are in the piney woods of the central part of Louisiana, IMO.
1. The Mississippi River Road heading out of NOLA is pretty good - take I-310 and get of at Norco. Head north.
2. From just West of Des Allemands, take Hwy 307 and loop around to Hwy 20 into Thibodeaux - that's a nice low traffic ride with some pretty fresh pavement.
3. North of the Lake, from Ponchatoula, Hwy 22 is a good ride, but the Livingston Parish Sherriff Popo are relentless - stay about 7 over and you'll be fine, but no more.
You might check out some of my ride reports for some more ideas. I know a lot more stuff West of Baton Rouge - in the Fall, we can meet in the middle and I'll gladly show you some roads. Right now its just so friggin hot, by the time we actually get somewhere, we will be too miserable to continue. In about 6-8 weeks, things should break.
I'm not trying to discourage you - I've ridden thousands of miles all over Louisiana. There is some good riding. I can't compare it to Indiana cause I don't know - but it's not North Carolina.
