Ive read a lot about the dreaded tick and am convinced my Marge has this affliction, though it wasn't obvious during the test rides prior to my purchace a week ago.

She's an 01 model, so i presume any chance of help from Yamaha is long past.

I've put about 1500 km on it since purchace (in on holidays :) ) and it seems significantly worse now.

So I've read most of the tech stuff on the official fix, but I was hoping there was something I can do other than pull the top apart and replace parts, eg a different oil an additive etc. As an interim measure. Any thoughts?

If it's really a ticker, then it has bad valve guides, and premature wear allows the valve to flop around a little bit, making the sound.

Some have run them anyway, not bothering to fix, with no apparent ill effects other than the noisy valve(s).

Regardless, there's no magic chemical to dump in that makes the guides restore lost material and straighten the valve up.

.... Any thoughts?
...Call your Yamaha Service Representative and see if they will help you...
You think they will bother with an 11 year old bike with such mileage?
Doubtful, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Why do think it's a ticker? What is the mileage? I find it hard to believe it would get significantly worse in just 1500 kms.

You know a lot of these things are noisy. Lots of peeps are easily fooled into thinking they have a ticker.

Perhaps nothing. Sometimes they are just noisy. You have got to give us more information.

Still waiting for some answers to questions I've already asked...........

81000km on the clock. Sorry, had put this in another post, not realized I missed mentioning it here.

Ticking strongest around 3000rpm +-500. Quite loud, sure its not normal, I feel like the corpse in the hearse driving next to me is going to pop the lid to have a look what the racket is! Still noticeable above 4000, but nowhere as much.

Try Yamaha. I doubt they'll fix it. If not, just ride it. I know one member here whose ticker is over 100,000 miles.
