Hi All,

Just wanted to introduce myself and see if anyone had any news on the FJR1300AE? Anyone know if it will show up in may? I have a deposit down, but the dealers always seem to know less than those in the know ;)

I almost plunked down a good bit of cash on the bmw k1200gt/k1200s but i'm glad i waited until i compared it to the FJR1300 at the motorcycle show. I'm glad i waited, but the suspense is killing me. I wish i'd got the FJR1300A instead now.

Welcome aboard. I'm sure you'll get tons of speculation about the arrival date of the AE...bottom line is, like it or not, you're a waiter. Start reading and enjoy the humor 'round here until your bike arrives.

Almost got a Beemer, eh? You made the right choice...you won't be sorry.

+1 !!

Welcome aboard !! I too, almost went for a BMW - but then there was Jim Owen's "little" problem in the 2005 Iron Butt Rally. You made the right choice.

:D

I wonder if any others backed away from the BMW as a result of their mechanical failures in last years IBR?

No amount of glossy brochure and faithful ownership can substitute 11 days of hard riding. :p

Well,

I have a BMW R1100S which has been with me through some 20 odd states where i have had time to think about what a bike should and shouldn't have....and bmw has started to lose the edge that originally pulled me that way. They dropped their tool kit and the whole notion of we'll pay to tow you to the nearest dealer during warranty. And have you looked at the k1200GT? It looks like they put a side of beef on each side. As for the k1200s, well, i can only say that i must be getting old  ; I just can't see myself riding that bike cross country even though it was very fun to ride. If I'm going to pay 20k for a bike it better do everything i want and bring me coffee every morning.

Deciding Factors in favor of the FJR

1) no vibration - yes please

2) comfy seat - yes please

2) best power/weight ratio in classr - yes please

3) nimble - yes please

4) save 4k to 5k - you have to ask?

5) slick gear box - yes please (and for those saying the gearbox is on the FJR is clunky, come over and ride my r1100s for a few days...we can trade ;)

6) silky smooth engine - yes please

the only points that the k1200gt shined more than the FJR was the electronic suspension adjustment and the built in cruise control.

And the FJR version of those mods can be had for about a grand. :D

skyway questioned whether or not someone moved away from BMW (toward an FJR) due to BMW unreliability -

Answer:

(for me)

Sort of.

I had a 99 BMW K1200LTC - with most of those miles coming the first year of ownership (about 35,000 of them) - which included the 99 IBR.

99 was the prototype year (I swear I'll never do that again) and I had several minor but irritation electric and electronic glitches in the bike. All of which were eventually repaired. I also suffered a rear drive failure at about 75,000 miles - which was not fixed under warranty (extended warranty had only recently run out).

Now a failure in 75,000 wouldn't be too surprising on many bikes - however, for me - the fact that bmw prides itself on longevity and service life - I was a little miffed. That they KNOW that they have had a problem with rear ends and have not stood up to the plate and handled those problems is what ticks me off. Yes, it is out of warranty - but they KNOW it is a problem and have tried to address the problem in subsequent bikes - same goes for GS.

In part - that was one of the reasons I moved away from BMW. Part was that I was tired of that big of a bike. I would have purchased a GS or the K12S (a HELL OF A BIKE FOLKS) - I love the GS and the new K12S is an absolute hoot to ride. I really like Telelever and paralever suspensions and the new front end on the S (Hossack) is great (still haven't got used to the front end dive under braking on the feejer). But failures on the "fixed" GS and the price made it an also ran in my short list.

Stepping up to the plate YAMAHA FJR.

one swing and a HOMER. Maybe not a grand slam - but a dinger, none the less.

I recall reading recently that almost nothing can be repaired or altered on the new Beems-that the ECM refuses to recognise anything but oe stuff or some such thing. The automotive industry tried this and failed, how is it that BMW can lock out the aftermarket?

You disappeared for a few days. I'm glad you're back. "I love you man!"

Welcome back.
