The wife and I took a trip to North GA this past weekend to see the leaves and ride the roads. Had to ride in about 4 hrs of cold rain to get to Jasper, GA Fri night, but then we had great weather Sat & Sun.
Saturday morning we headed to Amicolola Falls via GA-136 & GA-52. Then into Dahlonega for an early lunch at Dante's...very good soup and sandwich. After lunch we were off toward Suches and great curves on GA-60. We a huge crowd in parking lot of TWO...we just laughed at them for standing around when they could be riding. The curves were so good I decided to go beyond Suches about 12 miles before returning to make our way up Wolf Pen Gap Rd. (GA-180). On the return trip we saw that the previously mentioned huge crowd had mounted up and was headed our way. Unfortunately one of them went down we saw an amubulance en route. We stopped for a little break at Vogel State Park and then continued on to Brasstown Bald. After hiking the 6/10 mile trail to the top, we headed south on GA-75 toward Helen then back up GA-348 (Richard Russell Scenic Hwy) and down to Dahlonega on US-19. We totalled aout 200 miles that day.
Sunday headed back toward home via GA-52 over Ft. Mtn...stopped at the state park...saw more great scenery...then made our way to GA-136 (Ridge & Valley Scenic Byway) with more great curves. After a great lunch at a place called Taco Bell, we meandered thru some Alabama backroads to arrive home with another 220 miles on the odo.
Well, I couldn't figure out how to post pics. Will post some later after I figure it out.
Let's see if this works....the scenes we saw on our scenic ride:
Amicolola Falls
View from Woody Gap
We encountered a few slower paced leaf-peepers...most were kind enough to allow us to pass
I think this is Lake Winfield Scott, along GA-180
Tall trees in Sosebee Cove
Highest point in GA, Brasstown Bald...it was colder/windier in the parking area than up on top
Sunday morning leaving the motel, it actually dipped down to 34 after riding a few minutes
The mysterious wall at Fort Mountain, there are some interesting legends as to how/why/when this was built
I hope you enjoy the pics. Maybe next time I'll figure out how to make 'em bigger.
